Hi everyone, been here in Sheffield 6 months now and still don't know many people. I moved to Beighton, where there are so many lovely walks, around the Rother Valley, Beighton marshes, trans Pennine Trail etc. I have an OS map and mark down in red, all the routes I have followed (because I'm daft) But my problem is that I tire so easily. I can walk for about 4 miles, sometimes I have enegy to do more and sometimes I can't even get this far. I would dearly love to come and join in on some of your planned walks, especially as the weather is getting better. But until I feel able to walk at least 7 or 8 miles, I am a bit nervous about coming along. Also I don't drive, an added problem. Does anyone have any idea's about how to build up stamina and endurance, apart from the obvious of just getting out there as much as possible. I do walk most evenings around Beighton - a stroll of about 30 to 40 minutes - in the dark. Been doing this for over a year and just can't seem to get any fitter. Am 53 with Thyroid probs. Hi Repunzel, welcome to the walking group! Some of the walks that have been organised here in the past have involved shorter distances. We did one around Rivelin Valley that was quite short, some people carried on further but several people just did the first part of the walk. This group includes a good mix of people of all ages and abilities so i am sure we could accommodate you some how, theres no need to be nervous. Maybe you could post and suggest a shorter easier walk somewhere. Would be nice to meet you! :-)

It aint ! I dont drive either and use the tram, catching a bus or train for some walks we go on, or on some walks catching a lift from other walkers that have a car (you'll see on some threads they offer lifts..)
For example - wentworth walk this sunday - i'm catching tram to town from waterthorpe, then get the train to elsecar

Hi Sara
Following on from what other `regulars` have posted, please don`t be nervous about coming on a walk, you`ll be surprised at how laid back, and casual it all is, especially the pace at which we walk! There are always plenty of stops, and you`ll be amazed how quickly the miles, and the time passes when you`re having a natter whilst you`re walking along. My first ever walk was with the Walking Group 6 months ago, and was 10.5 miles, and I was terrified at the prospect beforehand, but I managed it, and I`ll tell you summat for nowt, once you`ve done that, you can tackle anything!
Oh and by the way, being 53 yo is no obstacle with this group, in fact, welcome to the 53 club on behalf of the 2 other members!
Why not give it a try on Sunday on the Wentworth Walk? It`s quite easy to get to on public transport, and the walk itself isn`t too strenuous after the first mile, and there`s a `drop-out point` a couple of miles before the end if you`re struggling!

Hello  Please come and join us soon Repunzel! Most of the walks we do at a very steady pace... sometimes it takes us all day to do a 5 or 6 mile walk, so you'd probably manage OK.  We also have loads of stops on the way, for refreshments, loo stops, photo opportunities, and more often than not, nattering.
We'll get our thinking caps on for some shorter walks, so watch this space!

Thank you all so much for your replies...I feel welcome already and you sound a great bunch. I like the idea of the '53 club' haha. Will keep a look out for a shorter walk to begin with and might be able to drag my mate along too, who also likes walking. Tell ya what...these ere hills are giving me muscles in places I didn't know I had! I've just moved from Norfolk and before that was brought up in Hull, both places as flat as pancakes! Excellent! You might notice though that we don't do many walks with hills... we are a lazy bunch sometimes

<--------- The other member of the '53 club'.If I can do it - you can do it,Repunzel.I jumped into the walking group with both feet and don't regret it for a minute.We've been to some lovely places,had some great conversations and eaten some VERY dodgy salads!
If you take a look at Grissom's pics of the walks,you'll get an idea of the SF walking group thing.Very relaxed and friendly and beautiful scenery into the bargain.
It'll be good to see you when you join us.
