Rather than publicly flog drug users (old joke ) I would prefer flog the people at Sheffield train station for making a complete mess of the parking/pick-up system. Anyone who's been down there to pick-up a friend on a busy evening will surely agree that it's complete chaos, with people parking anyway but the brand new multi-storey. Personally I would be happy to park in there, if they had the intelligence to increase the free parking time from 10 to say 20 minutes.

If you want to do anything more than simply touch the station's entrance and sprint back to the car, then you will easily find yourself over the 10 minute limit. This is even more true when you consider the "timer" starts as soon as you enter the car park, rather than once you've found a space (it takes a while!).

Today was a typical example - having ran to the ticket office I found that all but 2 of the 101 service windows were closed (as per normal). The odds of making a quick enquiry and getting back to the car within ten minutes was some where between nil and zero. It's a conspiracy I tell you

Grr...

Youre best off parking in that drop off/taxi only bit - you know the one way bit of road adjacent to the station. Ive been in there for up to half an hour and no1 has noticed, but i suppose it depends on the time of day and how many cars are there.

It's as if they are deliberately driving people away from the city.

All these points mentioned in different threads may be small picky things, but when you put them together it makes Sheffield a very undesirable place to visit.

I've come to the conclusion that you are the resident Sheffield basher.

I would just point out that before the changes there was no free parking - the old short stay was 50p for 20 mins.

You can avoid queues for advance tickets by using the internet - book at www.qjump.co.uk and tickets can either be posted or collected from the self service fast-ticket machine in the travel centre.

Yes, the former car park at the front of the station does look a chaotic mess, but if Sheffield One (or whatever they are called) had actually got their arse into gear and done their bit on time, that lovely new public square would have begun construction as soon as the multi storey opened.

Also it doesn't help that Sheffield motorists brain seems to turn to jelly on approaching the station, and the simple abilities to read and follow large signs to the car park and not stop on double yellow lines seem to escape them.

Perhaps the One in SheffieldOne means they only have the ability to do one project at a time

Not that I'm bitter or anything (they randomly answer and then ignore my requests for interviews.)

Of all the cities I know in the UK, Sheffield is the nicest.

Yes, we know that but does anyone else? The only coverage Sheffield gets is on that police chase programme (was on last night) and that just focuses on The Manor.

We need to look at the city through the eyes of a tourist. I have a slight advantage as I don't live in the city anymore, and can see things that most probably take for granted.

Yes, Sheffield has always been said to be England's best kept secret!

The city centre, if you ignore the building sites, is a nice place, and with such quality attractions as the Millenium galleries/winter garden complex opening, just gets better. the nightlife is good, and there is a great vibe to the place. It is easy to travel about and there is very spectacular countryside a short car or train ride away.

I have to say, despite the few faults with Sheffield, I am proud of my home city.
