Planning permission has been granted for a new waiting room at Sheffield station as the latest stage in the redevelopment of the building.
I cant believe the station's redevelopment wont be complete until 2008!
Why's it going to take so long?
The station is like a building site at the moment and looks a right mess, with the worst probably still to come, I had a tractor digger thing following me down one of the platforms last week, which was quite scary, lol!
Also when I was in the station at around 23:40 the other night the place was bustling with construction activity, are they working 24/7 on the station?

They might want to spend more time during the night sorting out the bodged up roundabout next to the station, causes traffic jams 5 times worse than before and to be a little frank- I'm sick of it and wish I didn't have to work in the city centre.

Obviously it's great that the station's being done, but I'm not kidding, every time I've been through Sheff station in the past 5 years it seems to have been half dug up. My memory may be playing tricks on me but they seem to finish renovating it only to start all over again.

Most of the work is being done at night to minimise disruption.
As for not being completed until 2008... would u like the station to shut for 6 months so they can get it all done quicker?

The work on the platforms is due to be done by October 2005 - I think it's the bits at the front of the station that are taking longer.
It is all being done in phases to minimise disruption.

I fancied being an architect too, but I didn't have any A levels so I couldn't go to University, I had to become a computer programmer instead :0(

No I wouldn't like the station to be closed for 6 months, but dont forgot phase one of the Station Masterplan started back in 2001 when the new central footbridge was constructed.
2001-2008 seems such a long time.
Railtrack estimated the redevelopment would only cost £35m, but now recents reports indicate the costs to be well over £50m, still I suppose thats cheap compared to the redevelopment of Leeds City Station which cost over £250m.

Does anyone at all have a picture of what the station will look like when its all done?? I think Sheffield station should be covered just like the one in leeds, and manchester, it makes it look so much better, bigger, and its warmer...

Definitely even Hull and York have completely covered stations.
I can't find any pictures of the internal station plans either, maybe they are making them up has they go along!

With all the new roadworks out front, if you're coming from the Queen's Road end of town, you have drive all the way round the Parkway roundabout and back again to get to the station! Unbelievable.

As I remember the current waiting room used to stink and was dirty and depressing.

You're not from round these parts, are you?
get in the right hand lane and follow the road round to the left. Stay right so you drive round three sides of No Frills DIY. Straight on at the traffic lights. There's the station. Much less dangerous than the previous arrangement.

Don't get too excited. I suspect the new waiting room may be a first class lounge

The complete plans were on display at the town hall for a while so that everyone could see what it would all look like when it`s finished.
