There has been much debate about a shortage of prison places, and the start of a new prison-building programme. So to counter this shortage, should a prison be built in Sheffield, as Leeds, Wakefield and Doncaster already have prisons?

Dunno, but to combat the 'overcrowdness', why not ship 'em abroad, to Germany, France, USA, Afghanistan?!?! Makes sense to me.

I don't think there'll be much room in French and German prisons - but the US and Afghanistan sound very tempting.

Why build here?
'Offshore' the whole prison industry.
How many prisoner/months could we afford at the present expenditure if the jails were in the middle of Namibia for example? How many Namibian screws for the price of 1 British one?
1 twentieth the present cost of a screw would probably get you a much bigger and better African one.
Their Government would be keen on the income too I'll bet.
Buy foreign!! You know it makes sense!

I don't personally support the idea of building one in Sheffield, however unless I agree that it's fair to do so, then they I can't continue to complain about the over-crowding of prisons.

Why not? Sheffield is perfect with the hills - build one at the bottom of one. No smackheads will make it up to the top in a chase.
Like regular business though, there's no sound reason for relocating to Sheffield ahead of your Wakefields and Doncasters as it's all about location, location, location and great transport links. Built out the way, like they are in Donny, they are okay and bring jobs with little downside.

Don't listen to rumours, the "extra money" is pennies - Leeds (Armley), Manchester (Strangeways), Liverpoo (Walton) etc have prisons - and as many potholes as Sheffield - and as many one way systems in their city centres.

Never did understand why prisons were built in town centres. HMP Slade had the right idea - anybody escapes from a prison built in the middle of God-knows-where will probably die of exposure before morning, or else be begging to be let back in.
So, no, I would not support the building of a prison in Sheffield, but not out of nimbyism. I don't think they should be in large population centres as it's too easy for anyone who escapes to get lost.

Put a great big security fence round the Manor and hey presto! Not only have you got a quick and cheap prison, but all the cons are already inside!

It would make more sense to reopen Middlewood hospital, (and all the other mental hospitals) and get all the people with psychiatric problems under proper treatment regimes again. That would free up about 30% of prison places, probably cost less, and solve some perpetual crime problems.

Should Sheffield have a prison?
What a stupid question this is, in an ideal world the answer is obviously no.
Why anywhere would want a prison is beyond me.

I would like there to be space port as well, please.
And one of those places that baddies use as their secret headquarters in 007 movies....
Perhaps the Snow Village could be the prison

in ideal world there wouldn't be criminals, but there is, it would make more sense to put shefields criminals in a sheffield prison rather than north allerton or doncaster, that way at least sheffield would have more jobs.
