Nope, but I followed forum gardeners advice and 'pronged' my lawn all over with a normal fork (I did wiggle it about a bit) in an attempt to get rid of the marshyness, and it seems to be working Still a long way to go though.

I've tried this all autumn, but to no avail.

I've had a word with a local nursery...they've suggested green thumb because the tool is very expensive.

I'll try and find the number...unless anyone has heard of them for me??

HSS hire out a lawn aerator for £12.50 weekend/£20 per week. It's not a hollow-tined thing as far as I can see, but it might be worth a go. Certainly looks easier than attacking with a normal garden fork!

In fact, us waterlogged forummers could probably hire one for the week and do the rounds with it!

I bought one of these hollow tine things.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Hollow-Tine-La...QQcmdZViewItem

My lawn is about 100sqm and i destoryed the damn thing less than a quarter of the way through. You see how you have to press your foot on it to go in??? well i had to literally jump on the thing to get it in and then rag it back out..... and it was after some rain!!! hence the thing eventually broke on the weld points.

Ideally, i think i need one of these from HSS Hire. But at £67.50+vat per day.... its a bit expensive..... maybe we could do 3 or 4 gardens between us in the day and share the cost!! LOL.

Does anyone own a hollow tined fork? My lawn care book suggests you should use it only once every three years. I would like to borrow one in September. But if noone has one I may try and make one-it is after all a simple assembly of steel tubes! 2011

In the end I decided to get Green Thumb round...... The do it for you as part of yearly maintenance..... it only cost me £32 which is about a third of the price of hiring one.

Job done.

cheers for this information Zarch. Having read the posts from 2007-8 regarding this tool, I wonder whether our heavy S.Yorkshire is the problem and shall give Green Thumb a call.

Does anyone other than green thumb do this service? I just need my lawn drainage improving. I don't really want a load of chemicals.

Yes they do Jon. Have mine done once a year now. They usually do it during the winteras part of their routine, but i'm sure they'd do it now if you were having problems.

I've heard varied feedback on Greenthumb so I'm not sure about them...

Does anyone know of another gardening firm which will do hollow tine aeration by machine? I realise I could hire a machine but there would probably only be an hours work for it plus they're very heavy to transport.

Thanks

What could they get wrong in the hollow tining process to be worried about?

And they'll probably charge you half of what it would cost to hire the machine yourself?

I can appreciate people might have different opinions about their chemical lawn type services, but this is just a one off mechanical job?
