If you're planning to get a train today, be aware that many trains - particularly long distance ones run by Virgin and Midland Mainline, are subject to severe delays and cancellations due to high winds and flooding. A 50 mph blanket speed limit has been imposed across pretty much the whole of the country, which means that trains that do run will get progressively later and later.
Local services within South Yorkshire are pretty much okay, though there's a few relatively minor delays.
Check www.nationalrail.co.uk, or ring Rail Enquiries on 08457 484950, if you'd like it explained to you in an Indian accent....

Damned annoying. Midland Mainline aren't operating from Sheffield, just putting buses on - which will probably get blown over - yet somehow Virgin are still operating as are Central Trains. Actually Central Trains say they're starting from Crewe but not which way they're going to/from Crewe. Most annoying.

Services on the East Coast Mainline (Doncaster - Kings X) are affected too - reduced service. The North East has widespread power cuts, so I've no idea how the electric sets are getting about

Latest on trains... Midland Mainline are, and have been all day, running a train between Sheffield and Derby at xx:27, then another train from Derby to London at xx:34 with extended journey times (averaging a total of about 5-6 hours apparently).
Central Trains have suspended all services in this area. No replacement transport is being provided either
Transpennine Express have resumed services to Cleethorpes and Manchester Airport but with delays and alterations.
Loads of other delays, cancellations and alterations especially on Virgin services! Don't travel!!!!!

Trains from (and to) Manchester are up the spout. Manchester Picadilly Stationj is closed, and Stockport I think. My OH is over there now - and my stepdad works for the trains ... better all go to the pub if you're trying to get to/from Manchester???

Hate to put you straight squire but a Midland Mainline shuttle service is a train that is put on from Sheffield to Derby instead of going to St Pancras, during disruption.

And the relevance of resurrecting this thread is......?
For the record, the trains aren't disrupted today (7/2) - well, no more so than usual......

Is that apart from the failed train nr Swinton this morning that delayed services for 3 hours?
