Does is have OS X? If so, there are plenty of good OpenSource apps available.

NeoOffice is the OS X build for OpenOffice, Gimp is a good OpenSource equivalent of Photoshop, and there's Scribus, Inkscape and more...

Check: http://www.opensourcemac.org/ for a comprehensive (though not exhaustive) list, as well as http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx/ and Apple's own http://www.apple.com/uk/downloads/macosx/.

If you haven't got Mac OS X, get it (although make sure you have enough RAM - G3 iMacs have hardly any as standard).

Well, there's very little new stuff released for OS9 nowadays because Apple released OSX about 5 years ago.

You could try here for starters, but make sure that whatever you try to use is OS9-compatible.

Is there something in particular you want to be able to do with the computer?

Might be frustrating running OSX on a G3 iMac, depending on which model it is.

Look in the Apple menu for something called Apple System Profiler. This will tell you what the specs of your computers are. How much memory? What speed processor?

If its 233MHz it's a revision A or B iMac, so its maximum memory capacity is 256Mb. I think you might be looking at the free space on the hard drive (shipped with 4GB) rather the available RAM. Even if you maxed it out, OS X wouldn't be very happy on it (needs 512MB for comfortable use), I'm afraid to say...

[edit:] although, the eMac came with 256Mb, and I have seen OS X running fine on one of those...

I think you'd be better sticking with OS 9 apps at the sites that have been suggested though.

~I run OSX 10.3.9 Perfectly fine on a G2 233Mhz with 256Mb Ram on a 6GB Hard Drive

You should look at getting OSX 10.3 installed, dont go for 10.4 because it WILL complain about lack of memory and hard drive, and 10.2 doesnt have much support from software any more..

I concur - I suggested to a friend running a similarly-spec'd system that they install 10.3 rather than 10.4.

As Ghozer has suggested, you'd be better off with "Panther" (10.3) on your machine - 10.4 is too resource-hungry. You'd still need to upgrade the RAM if you have the base 64Mb for your model. I sold a copy of Panther on eBay for a little over 30 quid, and I think this seems to be the going rate for a second-hand original.

If I were you Vadym, I'd stick with OS9, there is still software available, Office 2000 which will run quite adequately on your 233mhz processor. To Run 10.3.9 you will taking up a large partition of your 4gb HD. I myself have a 333 G3 iMac running 10.3.9 with 4gb HD and 256 RAM and it struggles compared to my G4 Mirrordoor. You can always cut down the system resource like not running Classic, but these machines run a lot better on OS9.

I dont run 'Classic', im running a 233, 512mb Ram, and a 6GB Hdd, and the machine handles it well, plus alot of the newer stuff requires some 10.3x components and wont run on OS9, Plus you get Safari - that should be more than enough of a reason...
