mattjon   10 #1 Posted January 8, 2007 On a number of recent threads, I have noticed people seeking advice on commuting/working/ parking in Leeds. Is this all part of a sinister plan, the consequences of which are to enable Leeds to entice the good people of Sheffield to take their skills elsewhere. It would be interesting to find out how many people have re-located to work in Leeds and the type of work that is attracting them. Merry_Legs   10 #2 Posted January 8, 2007 My friend left a job at Sheff Uni to get a job at Unilever in Leeds/Seacroft. I don't think she regrets it.
 Share this content via...
JoeP Â Â 11 #3 Posted January 8, 2007 I looked in to it but to afford a house in Leeds of the same type in a similar area would have at least doubled my mortgage, assuming I could have actually afforded it at all!! Â I contracted in leeds for several years - the commute's a bit of a pig but it would have to be a VERY well paid job to get me to live there. Â And if it were that well paid, I'd simply stay in Sheffield and hire a Chauffeur!
 Share this content via...

Most graduates I know in sheffield complain there are no graduate level jobs here. And certainly my next job wont be in sheffield for the same reason - there are no jobs here that make use of my skills.
 Share this content via...

I'm working in York for the same reasons, i could find nothing in Sheffield that suited my qualifications, I'm now job hunting again and there's still nothing... I glance at The Star on Thursdays and it just pales in comparison to the career opportunities over here.
 Share this content via...
Leg-end   10 #8 Posted January 8, 2007 Yeah, i'm trying to relocate back up North and use my MSc in GIS, but there isn't a single thing about (i appreciate Jan is not a busy time for recruiting). I'll more than likely end up in Manchester or Leeds.
 Share this content via...
eralc   10 #9 Posted January 8, 2007 If it's any help... count me in as someone who works in Sheffield but lives in Leeds!  However, this is only a temporary exile of a few months... post getting married and pre selling my house / buying another in Sheffield. Then I just have to hope that my husband can get a decent IT/systems analyst job here and not lumber him with the dreaded commute. Any tips?  Clare
 Share this content via...
Unisol   12 #10 Posted January 8, 2007 Has anyone actually considered starting up their own company in their such specialist field?  You could then be the best in your field in the Sheffield area and demand the highest rates for your product/service.  Just a thought. firecracker   10 #11 Posted January 9, 2007 There's nothing sinister about the brain drain. It is real. Sheffield IS lacking in opportunities as regards jobs, especially jobs with real career pathways. A former colleague of mine has stated his intention to move down to Nottingham to stay with relatives because of dire opportunities in Sheffield. He obviously thinks he might have a much better chance there, and one look at any jobsite reveals far more vacancies in Nottingham than in Sheffield. Its no use trying to pretend out of sentimentality that Sheffield is better than Leeds or Nottingham for job opportunities. It isn't. It is way way way behind either city. Painful it is to admit this - the bullet has to be bitten by admitting the truth. And at the end of the day, hostility towards Leeds and Nottingham on these forums seems to be based on envy more than anything else.
