Yes the chippy at townend is very good, I can't remember the name either (even though I went yesterday ) their lunchtime special is paricularly good value.
The Manor Top one is good also and must get the award for the longest opening hours in Sheffield, it's even open on Sundays I think.

also when i lived in shirecliffe best one was shirecliffe chippy on longly ave west.,but funny opening hours tho but great chips always full shop.
if you want to feed a army on one bag of chips.then chip and scales on lane top can do that.

I was the served the worst fish ever this week - on my way home down m74....batter was rock hard and when I snapped it in half fish was barely there, just a solid shrivelled lump.
Can't believe they served it. Got my money back and went hungry until i got home!

Another vote for The Woodseats Fisheries and also Manor Top chippy
Avoid Derbyshire Lane chippy (the one near Mundella school). I used to live across the road but would still prefer to go elsewhere. Strangely, people seem to like them. Should Newfield school clamp down on kids coming out at dinner though, that chippy would go out of business!

How anyone - other than the owner - can recommend Abbey Friary is beyond me.
I've stopped going there.
Two Steps is hit and miss. Pies okay.
Give Banner Cross Fisheries a try. They don't disappoint.
But if you're near an Admiral shop, that's the place.

Two Steps on Sharrow Vale road is the best I've found, and it just happens to be sheffield's oldest chippy too.

Little out of the way but the chippy in Bradwell in the Hope Valley is excellent. Admiral at Crookes has got to be favourite in Sunny Shef though.

BEST CHIP SHOP IS PHEONIX FISHBAR OPPOSITE THE BIG TREE. THIS SHOP IS THE BEST IN SHEFFIELD. IT'S FISH AND CHIPS ARE AMAZING. IT ALSO DOES QUALITY KEBABS TOO. THERE IS ANOTHER CHIP SHOP FURTHER UP CALLED 'WOODSEAT FISHERIES' WHICH IS SHOCKING. ALL THE FOOD IS BLACK. I HAVE BEEN IN A FEW TIMES AND THE NEXT DAY I WAS DYING. I THINK ITS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE CHIPS OR THE DOGGY LOOKING FISH. THE WHOLE SHOP SMELLS HORRIBLE TOO. GO TO PHEONIX FISHBAR ITS THE BEST

Don't confuse with Phoenix. opposite Big Tree, they sell chips you could only eat when you're drunk. And I sometimes do when I'm drunk, and I can't get rid of the taste in the morning.

I decided to give woodseats fisheries a second chance after previous bad experiences. The pheonix fishbar was closed and i was hungry so i had no option. The food was horrible. All i could taste was the greecy dripping. Next time i would rather starve. I would also like to add that 'muddycoffee' talks rubbish. He would not know decent fish and chips if it jumped up and bit his on the nose. "which it probably would if bought from woodseats fisheries" Phoenix is the best.

After growing up in the trade I am very particular. The best one I've found so far is TWO STEPS on Sharrow lanejust up from porter cottage. Chips are great. Gravy however needs improvement. The hardest thing to get right though is mushy peas - bu I would give theirs 7.5/8 out of ten.
I had a fish the other day which could've done with a bit longer in the frier - didn't seem like the fat was hot enough but this is an isolated case.
Friendly, traditional and take proper pride in what they do. And they can fry too!

I hate you all - there are no chippies in Texas
I can't wait for Christmas - I'll be home for decent curries and fish and chips.
My favorite chip shops in Sheffield were the one at Manor Top and the Harlequin opposite SHU. The best I had in a long time were from the Magpie cafe in Whitby. I also had a damn fine curry there at a tiny place in the railway station.
Oh god I need this food.
Again - I hate you all.
I shall just have to satisfy myself for the moment with the best damn burgers and BBQ ever.

I am proud that this post is still alive and kicking. having started it almost 3 years ago.
The last post took me back to my childhood, going around the corner to fetch the chips from 2 steps on a Saturday dinner, great days....keep em coming

Chippie, bottom of Greystones Rd, corner of first road on the left, leaving Ecclesall Rd.
The fish & chips I can highly recommend. TIP: If you're buying for two, only order 1 lot of chips, the portions are huge, as are the fish!
Can't speak for the rest of the menu, though if there's such a thing as a 'bad' battered sausage, I bought one from there the other week, the taste was enough to put me off that particular delicacy for life!
No argument with their basic fish & chips though --- Delicious!
P.S. Useful thread AndyB, so far I've tried a couple of local 'possibles' mentioned on here, I still return to the one I've recommended above though!
