Ok, hot debate time, what and where is the best chippy in Sheffield, chips have to be cooked in dripping or lard and they have to sell big white bread cakes covered in flour.

I think the best is Johns in Stocksbridge.

Tip for all you Sheffield travellers- Don't ask for a fishcake in Chesterfield and expect a Sheffield fishcake (fish sandwiched between two slices of potatoe, then batered) as you'll get a Ross type thing (mashed tater, parsley with a fishy taste) But if you ask for a fish fritter you'll get the real Sheffield thing. In Nottingham you'll get Rossy thing whatever you ask for!
Couldn't take the pace so came back here to find local chippy shut and real shortage of fishcakes with no delivery facility!

The best Chippy? The Baracuda on City Road. No question. My tubby gut is at least 50% the fault of their chips and battered sausage!!

Mmmmmm......chips and sausage. Dammit, why are there no Fish and Chip shops in Calgary???

Best by far (the acid test is after you've eaten them - did they live up to your taste expectations?) are at the Chip Shop bang opposite the PunchBowl pub at Crookes. Cheap, massive white fish and tasty well cooked chips. Good batter and he never disappoints.

I haven't found one decent chippie since moving to sheffield.

They either have the more batter than fish - or they wouldn't know a decent portion of chips if it slapped them about the face with a wet kipper.

My fav' chippy of all time is a small chippy in Wosborough Common, Barnsley. Their chips were great and in large quantities and their fish was sold in brick like sizes.

Never got any kind of stomach upset from them either - which is more than can be said for some chippies round ere.

There you go. I was about to say exactly the same thing. Their "dustbin lid" chip butties are the dogs.

I Agree RPG!

There is only one good place in England for chips and thats cornwall. Newquay, Padstow, Wadebridge all have good chippies. By far one of the best I've been to is Harry Ramsdens and Barnicutts.

Ther best one in Sheffield is probably Harthill chippy. Its gorgeous, its not in Sheffield but on the outskirts. Try it.

Best chippie for miles around used to be "Queenies" at Hartley brook,Shiregreen. people used to travel miles for their Fish.
Not sure if its still there as I now live in Norfolk, where the Fishcakes are small and rissole like"yukk".

Admiral, without a doubt. Good chips and great sized haddock.

One at Swallownest is now under new management though?
