came to sheffield yesterday to see some friends and to have a couple of pre Christmas sherrys. Walking through the city (the lights near the city hall and the Christmas tree are lovely) and as I walk down past Coles, I saw a couple looking in mothercare window. She was holding a pram with a child in it, and both adults were swigging from large cans of stong lager!

she caught me looking at her and told me where to go. Obviously I must have looked dissaprovingly

am I just a grumpy old git? personally I just feel their behaviour is wrong!

hey ho

Parents drink too you know; if they were clearly p*ssed then fair enough, you should maybe have called them to the attention of the police, but otherwise, I reckon it's not really your business.

Fair comment crowefan - personally I hate to see toddlers drinking Coke.

I thought there was a local bye-law now against consuming alcohol in the street, - or does that only apply to footie fans ?

Have to agree with you - perhaps it's the way we were 'dragged' up !

I think there is an exclusion zone somewhere in the city Greybeard - not sure where exactly. I think there's been a thread about it on here at some time.

That must make me one too then, i think it's disgusting drinking alcohol in the streets (in seating areas outside pubs it's different), child or no child, especially out of a can. People seem to think it's acceptable with a can of beer but would it be the same with say a bottle of whisky or a bottle of Voda Mixers?

Another think that makes my blood boil is mums (or dads) pushing baby/young child in a pram with a fag hanging out of their mouth (not the child obviously).

Alcoholics (until the final stages) often don't behave in a drunken fashion, but their addiction still poisons their character and behaviour in other ways, which have a devastating effect on any child cursed enough to be in their 'care'. People might expect a former mental health worker such as yourself to be aware of that fact. The reported reaction to the OP doesn't exactly bode well for the child being brought up in an emotionally healthy way.

What time of day was this by the way Crowefan?

I'm quite well aware of that thankyou purdyamos; what would you suggest that one do when spotting a parent drinking beer in the street - give them a short speech about what sh*te parents they are?

Why not? Sh*te parents have free reign in this society because so many people think child cruelty is *not really their business*. Even people who are supposedly trained in the issue.

Crowefan wasn't asking for advice on what to 'do'. He just wanted to know if other people thought it was wrong. I gave my opinion.

I was on my way to college and saw a guy drinking a can of carling at 8.30. In a way, that's worse than drinking speial brew! At least then you can just say 'he's a bum'. This chap was drinking it like most people drink milk or juice in a morning. Not slagging the guy, I would have done the same.

When I was about 16.

interesting posts
I guess I feel that this behaviour looks sloppy!

I live in wales and the coastal train is often full of chavs walking around with cans of lager, I feel it is a sad reflection of how standards generally have fallen,
people just dont care of how they look, not only to their children but to anyone else.

the exclusion zone is actually the city centre itself....

definitely within the area of arundel gate/eyre st, and west street, as the ambassadors are always moving the drinkers on when they are near tesco and on devonshire green. (and confiscating their booze)

yes, alcohol can be consumed in beer-gardens etc, but not on the street

At the other end of the scale from parents drinking in the street, I was on a bus today and 2 young lads (looked around 14/15) got on,(actually they staggered on) showed their bus passes and paid their fare clutching a bottle each of white lightening cider!

I have never enjoyed drinking canned beer anyway.Has anyone read a report about the increase in Weil's disease? Thought to be caused by drinking from bottles and cans which have been stored in warehouses and rats urinating on them? Probably not true because the bacteria does not live long in dry conditions.
Enjoy
