Why does new street furniture have to be so ugly and clinical ?

Why do city planners etc believe nowadays that for something to be 'modern' or attractive it has to be made out of brushed steel with more right angles than a rubics cube ?

The bus stops are all gradually being replaced by glass and metal boxes, those new information towers that are springing up throughout the city centre look like razor blades and public seating tends to resemble scrap metal.

If they are determined to go for a modern look there are hundreds of innovative talented designers across the country who could come up with attractive interesting designs but, saying that, what's wrong with making a city look attractive with traditional decorative furniture like in other cities across Europe ?

Actually I like the new street furniture they are putting in. I think it looks nice and smart, and should be quite tough and last well.

I don't quite understand the point of the info point things that you describe as razor blades, but they look nice!

The bus stops are great, except for one saturday I was in town and a bus clipped the top corner of the the shelter and the glass roof shattered all over a couple of old ladies.

I don't like the old style decorative furniture, and in a city like sheffield with all the new buildings I think it would look out of place.

Also, in all my recent trips to Europe (Amsterdam, Berlin, Bergen, Oslo, Madrid, Cork etc) I seem to recall that they are all putting in a newer style of street furniture, bus stops, benches etc.

the stainless steel look is a tribute to sheffield's industry (don't start ), and besides that, they can get spray paint off it with a brillo pad

PS - I like the modern designs

Perhaps you should write to the council suggesting they install glass bubbles with bean bags for seating instead ?

I really don't like this expression "street furniture" - I keep expecting to see comfy chairs and sofas littering the side of the road.

I like the street furniture actually. Say the bollords at the top of fargate (the greeny copper ones with the curved top) have to be the best bollard's i've seen anywhere in the UK.

I think the Council should be congratulated (for once) The improvements to the street scene in the city centre over the past few years have been excellent.
