A tsunami is set to hit north and eastern Japan.

Meteorological experts say the giant waves are expected at 12.10pm.

BBC Breaking News

6.5 feet high - is that likely to cause much destruction?

The basic height can be multiplied several times over (up to about 5 times) by underlying geography of the bays and coastal shelves.

10 metres sounds a lot worse to me.

Meant, not as bad as past ones. Hopefully everyone has been given enough warning.

Japan has had a very efficient tsunami warning system for some years- which has worked effectively to reduce loss of life. I'm sure that this will be little comfort to those who lose their homes as a result of damage caused by the tsunami, but it's better than no warning at all.

It has already hit some of the Russian coast, and has been only mildly damaging there- but it has yet to get to Japan.

I'm just sat at my desk watching it on Sky news.

Latest estimate is 5-10 minute to impact - though there may be a delay on my feed....

If they're expecting this to hit soon, why are they still bobbing around in boats ??
I'd be out of there like a shot..
