I sometimes go to the moors over sheffield where climbers use the rocks for practice and where there are frequent accidents.

Seems to me it is too dangerous as a lot of these climbers are amateurs, shouldn't there be some control over people practising a sport that at best is risky and at worst a nightmare.

I've always thought the same about Yachting and what about Caving? You often hear of people trapped in caves. I can see why these type of interests are much fun though.

I enjoy rockclimbing. Especially in the area you have described Hal. There are a lot of amateur climbers who don't use the correct equipment, but being outdoors and in a public place how can this be controlled.

I am by no means an expert, but when I go it is only with a fully qualified intructor.

There's not that many rock-climbing accidents really despite the dangerous image - in most cases it's quite a safe sport.

There's very few cave rescues.

If you read the incident reports for mountain rescue and cave rescue teams, the majority of callouts are to hillwalkers or to people who are missing and suicidal.

Cycling is a dangerous sport as you put your life in the hands of Britains motorists and we fall off an average 3 times a year and at speed.
Climbing is obviously not in the same catagory and is deadly if you don't get it right.
I have only been once and i went with a Sheffield climbing club and they looked after me and i felt safe with them however I would not go with Fred Bloggs who reckons he knows it all but really knows nothing.
Check out the people you go with you may only get once chance.

As a rock climber of 27 years, I have to say that the stats show that it's more dangerous driving to where you are going to climb than doing the actual climbing!

Do we stop people driving?

Re climbing, caving & cycling,
If you have the right equipment and instruction then they are wonderful pastimes, in our area we mainly have walk in-walk out caves and are not prone to flooding like the pots of north yorks, i used to work at an outdoor pursuit centre as an instructor and always stressed the danger of adventurous pursuits if not done with a suitably experienced partner. as for cycling the biggest danger is sharing the road with other users long live the trans penine/ctc trails.

live as long as you want to, & want to as long as you live.

On Sunday 9th Aug 09, we lost a Red Mammut Jacket on the descent back to the carpark from the needle at Rivelin.
If anyone has found this, it would be really appreciated if you could contact Pete Saunders on 07887 694079.

Cheers.

I am an S.P.S.A. qualified instructor and have been climbing for over 25 years and in all that time have only ever witnessed one accident that required a medi vac rescue. What you must bear in mind is that most amateur climbers will not be "Leading" climbs (placing protection as you ascend) but will be using the "Top rope" method whereby a rope is anchored safely to the top of the climb and both ends dropped down the rock face, so you can effectively pull someone up a climb and if they do slip the only fall that they will take is the distance that the rope will stretch which is usually negligible. Climbing is a safe sport at the lower skill levels if there is someone there that is competent with plenty of experience to watch over beginners. For the climbers on here hows about this for a scare ? 25 foot run out on Darius (high tor) and pulled a flake off 50 foot twanger on the last section WHEEEEEEE BOING BOING... got back on and finished it though when I managed to get my heart back in my chest
