Totally agree, in that that it was appallingly handled, especially as there is a mandatory inspection of the ball after each wicket. The third wicket fell only about 15 minutes before hand, so, given that, if anything illegal had happened to the ball it would only be in that period.
The matter, and the ball, are with the match referee, so we'll just have to wait for the report. A very, very sad day for cricket though.

To be fair, the real sad day for cricket was when the ECB sold out the fans post-Ashes, and decided to chase Sky's money. Hence, the game has no real exposure here anymore. As bad as this is for cricket, the real tragedy is that not many people will care, because not many will know. I only saw it because I happened to be in Champs when they were showing highlights.

What staggered me was the profile of this story on BBC. It had about the first 5 minutes on 8 o'clock news before Iraq, Lebanon, Terror plot.
Unbelievable.
But why does Darrell Hair get the Pakistan games.? Surely some subtle tact in choosing umpires would have been appropriate. Maybe another umpire could have sorted this out but with the history between Hair and Pakistan, something like this was bound to get out of control very quickly.

Agreed about the news coverage, but you can't choose umpires/referees for teams. If you could Rob 'I hate United and have proved it every time I've refereed a game of theirs' Styles would have got nowhere near the Liverpool game at the weekend.
To be honest, none of this sort of thing really happened (except Shakoor Rana) when the umpires were from the home nation.

The Pakistan team did request for Mr Hair not to officiate their games but were ignored yet there are cases in the past where this type of request has been accepted. Mybe their request lead to even more straining at the seams so to speak.
