If you were to buy from the below 2 - which option would you go for and why?
option 1:
1999 T Reg VOLKSWAGEN GOLF 1.8 GTi
5 Doors, Manual, Hatchback, Petrol, 59,000 miles, Black, Full Service History, Power Steering, Central Locking, Electric Windows, Electric Mirrors, Alloy Wheels, Electric Sunroof, Drivers Airbag, Passenger Airbag, Immobiliser, Stereo. £4,995.
option 2:
2000 W Reg VOLKSWAGEN Golf 1.6 S
5 Doors, Manual, Hatchback, Petrol, 29,186 miles, Metallic Black, MOT-06-2007. ABS, Adjustable seats, Adjustable steering column/wheel, Central locking, Computer, Driver airbag, Electric mirrors, Electric windows, Head restraints, Passenger airbag, Power assisted steering, Side airbags. £4,995.
also do GTI cost more on petrol than a standard golf?

If I drove, I'd go for option 2, less mileage, power steering, passenger airbag...

Right then Moon, basially the 1.6s will be cheaper on insurance and fuel and the 1.8 gti will be more fun 2 drive n look better.
My head would tell me to get the newer 1.6s cos its v low miles BUT
My heart would tell me to get the GTi and they hold there value more cos there more desirable and 59,000 miles is nothing on a vw
Hope this helps

The GTi more power, more poke with the injection, and it has an immobiliser, which will do well for the insurance.
If your'e going to drive a dinky toy go for one with some power.
Next time go for a Jag! the bigger the better.

GTi will be quicker and will hold its value better, but will cost more on insurance and petrol.
the 1.6S isn't claiming to have full service history, so that needs checking out.
I'd have the GTi on what you've provided.

Given cars these days mileage doesn't really mean much mate.
I'd go with the GTi

Quite. Forget the insurance. Car's are like men..............injection is everything. I only drive BM's with 6 cylinder engines. Go for the GTI.

Yeah having read the descriptions of the two cars, I would agree with the above posters, have the GTi.

The two cars are not really comparable. The 1.6 is just a standard hatchback; safe, reliable and comfortable but nothing special. The GTi should be a real blast.
It depends on what type of car you want, ignore the spec, do you want something thats fun to drive but expensive to run or something that's totally sensible?

Option 2, the GTI may have had a hard life, wragged - plus be more expensive to run/ins etc. Plus, you can always debadge option 2 and add some nice 18" alloys to give it the look you require. But, if its performance, style and pulling power you need, why are you asking? Go for option one and enjoy the power that your right foot will deliver.

To be honest though they both sound a bit expensive. 52 plate GTi for 4k here.

So why not a big van? Jag's aren't particularly desirable and don't hold their value.
If the GTi is just a normal GTi (ie, not the Turbo GTi) then it's not THAT quick anyway. Not a great deal in petrol costs (the 1.6 will get about 2mpg more), or even insurance to be honest! The GTi is a group 10, 1.6 is a group 6.
As someone else has said, mileage is only a small factor to consider these days, especially with VW's. High mileage on older cars like Escorts etc is certainly a huge factor.. but the VW's are built to last.
I'd go with the GTi.

Must be how you drive, or you just picked a bad egg. I have a VW and so done loads of my friends and we all love them. The guy we get our cars off (trader) will say VW (or other German make) anytime.

It sure will. Engines aren't built like they used to be, if they're well serviced they'll last forever.
