I tried accepting these updates a few months ago.

Everything went pear shaped and it was a struggle to return to my internet accounts etc. I've since avoided like the plague!

Also had trouble with online updates in the past, rarely bother now.

I used SP2 off a seperate disc and no problems.

Never had a problem with SP2. I'd make sure all your drivers and programs that run on startup are all up-to-date as anyone could be causing you blue screens.

I was recommended, by the IT bod in our office, to download SP2 from here, and save it on to a separate disk for future use, if necessary.

The download is nearly three times the size of the Windows Update version, so may take a while to download.

It could be a driver issue as suggested earlier - have you updated your motherboard drivers in the last year? Also you may benefit from a BIOS update if not already done so. It might also be worth opening up your case and checking all components, especially memory, are firmly in place. Give it a quick once-over for dust, too.

By the way, no-one's mentioned, virus, spyware scans etc - do a comprehensive one, and defrag your drive.

I had a similar problem but now ive got a new PC.

I had auto updates on and it got to 75% on SP2 and everything stopped. Re-booted fine, but as to getting online, it didnt want to know. Ended up doing a system revoery in the end as it didnt want to know about system restore neither.

If you have the original XP disk you are better off slipstreaming SP2
