This is happening to me constantly whichever browser I use - this is my 3rd attempt to post this!!
I have Mozilla, Firefox and IE but they are all crashing about the place. I've re-run windows set-up but that hasn't helped. I've run ad-aware and spyblaster to no avail.
Is it just cos I've got a crap knocked off computer with 98 SE on it?

Make sure you have got a large enough paging file (virtual memory) as this can also cause the problem.

Also, you're not going to like this suggestion though... Bin Windows 98 SE and upgrade to either 2000 or XP, then download all the service packs for either.
Only downside of XP, which I've found to my detriment, is that most if not all of your software designed for Windows 98, won't work under XP... Which for me means that 90% of my PC games collection no longer works, especially with Service Pack 2 for XP Home installed.

Probably. Those sorts of problems are a pain in the bum to sort out. Consider reinstalling Windows. It's drastic, but probably quicker than tweaking here and there.

98SE's OK, IMO, if you're running on restricted hardware.
Spyro's got a good point about the Swap File - have you re-installed anything recently, like Modem drivers or any other part of the Network Stack?

Illegal operations on a knocked off computer eh ?
Did you try scanreg /restore before reinstalling Windows ? I run Win98SE and rarely get any problems in spite of all the junk it's saddled with, but scanreg always works for me.
Which Java runtime are you using ? I had a browser problem a year or so that was cured by replacing MS Java with Sun Java.

Have you tried the XP compatability mode wizard to get them running again ?
"Start" > "Run" > "hcp://system/compatctr/compatmode.htm" to start it
more info
