Just been watching Richard & Judy and it reminded me of this new rule the government are thinking of bringing in.

They want to ban proper halal & kosher slaughtering cos its cruel. Kosher butchers get the cows one at a time and slit their throats (or as the man on Richard and Judy put it - make an incision in the throat with an extremely sharp impliment, slicing through the carotid & jugular veins - like that makes it sound less painful)

The religious reason they said for doing it this way is that the cow is healthy when its killed, unlike ours that are stunned. They also say that cows dont feel pain from cutting these veins (The cows told them this personally)

Dont want to offend religions, but why the hell do they want to do that to a cow? Does it matter how its killed? Isnt it a bit of a cruel way to kill them? Surely no amount of religious reasoning can condone making an animal suffer for 2 mins as opposed to dying straight away.

The Jews & Muslims say the goverment are putting people before animals, but I say making people eat meat from animals that have been killed differently isnt the same as slitting throats.

I think the Halal and Kosher ways of slaughtering are inhumane and laws should be passed to make them illegal. If they have a problem with any laws I suggest that they move to a country where it is legal to slaughter in this way, and not try to turn our country and way of life into how their countries of origin are. In this country, many people are concerned with animal welfare. It is natural, when considering the food chain, that humans will eat some animals. This should be done in a way that causes minimum distress, pain, and suffering to the animal. I really can't understand religion. Why would God look less favourably upon followers that ate meat killed in a certain way? I'm no expert in Jewish or Muslim religions but I feel that somewhere along the way, cultural tendancies have become mixed up with and confused with religion.

I dont know really, I tried to look up why Jews do it but couldnt find much (didnt have much time either - a-levels and everything) and i think it has something to do with people in Isreal from history eating meat this way. Are there any Jews who can elaborate? or Muslims?

Aren't you arguing against yourself here? "Does it matter how its killed?" surely means you don't care... so what's your problem!?!

I don't care. The bottom line is that these animals are born to be killed for food... so let them be killed. If you want to be silly about it any make then bleed to death, then fine - but I want fast food, not slow, bloody slaughter

But really... does it matter? Not to me! We have to eat! Meat to live! (And don't give any of that "health reasons" rubbish cos Quorn factories are as bad as (if not worse) than meat factories for health and safety!!!

Yeah, they are born to end up as food, but since we're going to eat them the least we can do is offer them a decent quality of life, and a painless death.

I canne really comment on this. Only to say that in a recent pagan forum, the Halal and Kosher meant was raised above 'normal' slaughter methods because of it's way of killing???

I wonder if they actually know how it was killed??

I 'll put this little poser to them and find out what the deal is.

what i meant about 'does it matter how theyre killed' is that does it matter TO THEM if theyre killed less painfully - would it make a difference TO THEM if they were killed slightly differenly.
