I know that Norton is not everyones favourite AVbut I've not had any problems upto now.
I am getting the red 'needs attention' alert on the anti-virus telling me that my protection is out of date. I have tried to run the live update but it won't complete as it tells me
' the following updates have been aborted *gives me letters and numbers* failed during preprocessing welcome text phase'
What is this all about?????? And how do I sort it????
All help would be most appreciated. x

Scrap it and go for something useful - we use Panda (virus, firewall, spyware, content filter all in one)
Welcome to the ex Norton users club ....

Mo,
Assuming that you paid for Norton in the first place, and have paid to keep your subscription up to date, the Norton will be obliged to help you out.
Go to their website and start leaving messages!!!!

if the subscription has expired then it need sorting asp as norton silently stops protecting your PC until it's renewed, miss the renewal notice and your PC is wide open you don't even have the use of the out of date software to protect your PC, you may also find that some applications crash because the norton DLL's don't load because the subscription has expired, the most notable one would be M$ Outlook which falls in a heap most spectacularly if norton has expired
on the other hand if it has expired then there are several free antivirus products out there which are just as good and won't expire on you avast and AVG being two

My subscription is upto date so I can see no reason for it.
I have looked at the website and can't see any facility for leaving a message.....just lots of self help thingies (which aren't any help)
How can I get the aborted updates if I can't access the Live Update?
Would I be able to uninstall and then reinstall?

I'm getting the same thing after a recent live up date. The report code is LU1875.
Done a search for the fix on Symantec site, but it's as clear as mud.
Maybe time to change AV software, and don't say AVG 'cos I don't like it and Norton has always kept me safe.

AVG picks up 4 different viruses on 3 different CDs that I had burned whilst I had Norton AV (Norton still doesn't pick these up on the Laptop either) .

It's not a case of it not being everyone's favourite, the fact is that Norton AV is crap!
I use AVG (free) AV and Zone Alarm (free) firewall, and don't have any problems. There are plenty of other free AVs and firewalls out there, and there's a thread somewhere that lists most of them.
It amazes me that this is yet another thread about Norton, asking for advice, and the advice is substantially word for word what's been given in previous threads. The advice given in those previous threads is sound in most cases, so why not just follow that?

yeah just because you get a free 6 month subscription with every packet of cornflakes doesn't mean it's any good, and it's not even free then, the price just gets buried in the machine's price and the shop gets a kickback for including it

As above. Norton is the favourite of people who do not know what they are doing and want to pay money for something that looks good.. even though it breaks your e-mail setup 1 in every 10 updates.
DUMP Norton.
GET AVG.
'nuff said.

I do know what I am doing, thank you very much. I've not had a virus in five years. Norton works with my email fine. AVG doesn't.

There are two people on this thread (both of whom seem not to want to take good advice on board, and have used sarcasm to cover up the fact), both saying they don't have problems with Norton, but also saying that they are having problems with Norton update. I assume that Norton was pre-installed on your computers when you bought them ~ that pre-installation only covers free updates for a year, and then you have to pay an annual subscription, which is possibly the reason for your problems.
If you don't like AVG, there are alternatives. In the FAQ, Joe has kindly given a list of links to forum-user-recommended security download sites.
The concessus of many users of SF is that Norton is a nasty resources-hogging piece of garbage, and should be trashed a.s.a.p.

This was the straw that broke it for me. I wanted to upgrade products - not just renew for a year so I paid downloaded the edition containing parental content filter (kids started using it). It emails me a serial number which I enter and then it tells me that I need to activate it within 7 days - It won't activate. Goes through all the website "help" which basically said "ring us up" - remember this was a download from them...
Rings up and they say basically "well it should work" to which I reply "It doesn't" "well it should"
Sacked them there and then - to be fair I did get a refund the same day - one of the reasons you can select is..."activation problems"
Moved onto Mcafee and sacked that after a year - privacy controls let a trojan just come in and do what it wanted.
My PC man recommended panda - its a spanish company and used on servers and the like.
Mo, I don;t think its a case of not giving advice or not helping, the advice is to ditch norton...

You think you've had nothing. However, AVG picks up more than Norton (as I alluded to in this post).

That is down to how you set things up. AVG works perfectly well with emails (it even works with 602 LanSuite) providing you set it up correectly.
BTW AVG is on 3 Win 98, 2 XP, 1 Win 95, 1 2K systems

if AVG doesn't work with your email it is probable that you need to configure the email support module or even remove it completely, AVG has native support for some email apps (outlook for one) and doesn't require the module but it installs it anyway just in case
this page shows all the email related FAQs at Grisoft
