I want to give boxing a try and have been advised by someone at work that one of the best places in Sheffield is in Hillsborough just off Penison Road near the barracks called The Sheffield Boxing Centre.

Anyone heard of it or use it?

Any thoughts on this place or recommendations for anywhere?

I've never boxed before but use the gym 4-5 nights a week and would like to add boxing as a way to boost my fitness as well as learn how to box to keep it interesting (the pad work, bag work and sparring looks quite fun).

I've never been to that club. But theres a gym in the city centre what is really cool. Wellington Street. Tough Guise Gym. Its really good fun down there and everyone is dead nice. Its down the road from the Devonshire Chippy. Near the Devonshire Cat.

used to go about two years ago. Its on burton street just off Langsett road (or you can walk up from penistone road) Its really good, one of the best in sheff. Glyn Rhodes helps run it and he is very well regarded by the boxing community. Its bloody hard work though, I gave up after a bit because you have to be really dedicated.

I don't mind putting the effort in, although I can only spare probably two nights a week for it and will be mixing it with my gym routine.

Are they any good for complete beginners?

The hard work bit sounds good though, I need something extra in my existing routine to help with my plans.

You'll find it fine if you're used to exercise, I wasn't and found it tough.
2 nights a week is good, think they have 3 nights where you can just walk in. it used to be about £3. They get you warmed up doin star jumps etc, then you go on the bags, then spar for ages, then do circuit training, squats sit ups push ups etc. It's a really good workout. They teach you lots about boxing, and its all safe with mouth guards n head guards. give it a go!
I mite join you now I'm going on about it!!

I've seen a poster in the window of this gym advertising boxing for beginners. I walk past this gyn everyday and I have been toying with the idea of giving it a go. I'm currently training to run a marathon, but could do better with my general fitness and it it gets rid of my beer belly then it will be a bonus lol. Might pop in later on way to tram stop.

I just spoke to him, got his mobile number from the School, and he's at a boxing event in Liverpool today but will be open as usual next week.

I'm going on Monday to have a look at the place and am hoping to get started, it sounds good to me.

I plan to stop my CV work at the gym and replace it with this (should be more intense anyway) and then just concentrate on the weights instead. Should be a nice balanced workout.

Thanks for the help

We go to the one in town on Wellington Street we have a personal training session twice a week, Tues and Thurs, it's £5 each per session and there's currently 4 of us that attend. It's fine for complete beginners, we've all been going for about 4 years, but we used to go to a different gym. It's great, far better than the big gyms in town and you get personal traning for a fiver each. If you other place doesn't work out, or you fancy giving our place a try PM me.

Cheers
