Annie Bynnol   612 #1 Posted June 27, 2013 The firm contract for seven vehicles for the Sheffield to Rotherham Parkgate pilot scheme was signed on June 19th. The tram-trains are to be built by Vossloh in Spain and are scheduled to enter service in 2015.  The route will need a new 400 m connection at Meadowhall South. The train trams' equipment will be 750 V DC and 25 kV 50 Hz The tram-train pilot project is being led by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, funded by the Department for Transport and Network Rail and run by Northern Rail (responsible for selecting Vossloh) and tram operator Stagecoach Supertram. chipspice   10 #2 Posted June 27, 2013 if it's cheap enough i might use it since i work near parkgate but the only problem is that you can't take bikes on them which you can on northern rail.
 Share this content via...
dosxuk   10 #3 Posted June 27, 2013 The new tram-train vehicles will also be used to supplement the existing trams on their routes to increase the number of trams during peak periods.
 Share this content via...

dosxuk   10 #6 Posted June 27, 2013 What's a train tram?  It's a light rail vehicle which can run on heavy rail infrastructure.  Basically a tram which won't be completely flattened by a collision with a loaded freight train and won't derail going over points. Jeffrey Shaw   90 #11 Posted June 27, 2013 to be built by Vossloh in Spain Shame. Couldn't any UK firms make them? (And 'Vossloh' doesn't sound very Spanish either!)
 Share this content via...
dosxuk   10 #12 Posted June 27, 2013 Shame. Couldn't any UK firms make them? (And 'Vossloh' doesn't sound very Spanish either!)  They're German.  There are no companies manufacturing trams in the UK. And those which used to have no experience or existing designs for tram-train units, while several of the European companies have built them in the past.  Also, for an order of 7 units, it wouldn't make financially sense on any level to set up a company / factory in the UK to build them.
