has anyone else spotted pop stars in there? there's been a few over the years!

(the photo was taken from my band's old practice room one very sunny and stormy day in 1996...we moved out soon after to make way for MOLOKO!)

Not a pop star, but I know it is a pub favoured by Steve Lamaq off of Radio 1 when he comes to Sheffield.

The Rutland!! Loads of my mates have worked there and I used to live round the corner - so quirky with a lovely beer garden. Wouldn't exactly call it full of popstars though... Is this some kind of wicked plug?

Where is the Rutland anyway? Picture seems familiar, but I can't place it.

From about 1994 to 2000 or thereabouts I was a reasonably regular imbiber in the Rutland, as I was involved with a few projects in and around the CIQ and Science Park.

I remember actually having a beer with Mr Williams and people he was working with around the time he was starting to make the break from boybands to 'rockstar' - he'd left Take That and was starting out in 'Indiedom'. Probably after or around the time he was hanging out with the Gallaghers. He was such a nice guy.

I encountered a couple of the Longpigs in there as well, I think.

The Landlord at that time, Phil, was a great bloke - haven't been in on a regular basis for quite a while, so not sure who's in charge now, but the pub has been 'immortalised in fiction' in a series of short stories I've been writing.

Dame Phil is still there, but not for much longer - I understand as he is calling it a day. The pub isn't what it was though.

I have to say that on the odd occasion I've been in in recent years the atmosphere is very different. I should try and get myself in for a final beer from Phil whils he's still there!

I don't THINK I owe him any money...

nah!

i've not been in for about ten years!

although it was a haunt for media-types and semi-pop stars from the "cultural industries" across the road!
