I've got a massive mp3 collection on my machine at home which I'd like to be able to 'stream' so I can listen to all of my music at work, preferably by queueing up a playlist via my web browser and listening to the stream in iTunes.

I've had a quick look around and I'm going to try out subsonic but wondered if anybody has any better recommendations or advice?

Cheers!

Don't have any alternatives, but subsonic sounds pretty good, I might give that a go myself.

I just use Shoutcast, Password it, and your sorted.

though Subsonic is nice - I have used it before.

Just as a follow up to this, I've now installed Subsonic and it really is the mutt's nuts - does exactly what I wanted it to, and a bit more besides!

The technology is called "UPNP" I am told,
And there are lots of them. A mate of mine swears by "twonky"

Which will even stream video to a phone after running a bandwidth check first. All the compression is done on the fly at the server side at "twonky"

Yeah, Subsonic let's you set up different bitrates for different users and compresses on the fly using LAME. So I can have it relatively low for work listening and full quality for on the network at home.
