Hi Jade, I'm looking for one too. You are probably looking at the same 2 cameras as me, Nikon D50 or Canon EOS350. The Canon at £525 with a lens is over your budget, (and mine as I also want a 70 - 300 zoom.) The Nikon is £396 with a lens, another £110 for the zoom, and all the research I have done is pointing to the Nikon being the better camera. Most all of the reviews on it say it is a better camera than the D70. I've found the best price to be www.Jessops.com

I use a canon EOS350 and to me it is that far better camera the nikon are alright but they can be expensive you have to think about the cost of the lenses and the nikon ones are very expensive. that dosent mean to say I dont use nikon because I do I do sometimes use the nikon D100 but I didnt buy it it is a firms camera so it is there when I need it, just like the canon EOS350 and thats the camera I use all the time, I all so use a canon EOS300 as I like to stick to the film camera's digital camera's are the last resort for me all though saying that I am looking at the moment to buy a pentax IST DL digital camera but this is just as a spare back up one. so price wise i would go for the canon plus there is some good deals at the moment with jessops photography shops.

IMHO It all depends on what you already have. If you have already SLRs from say Nikon then it's probably better to get a Nikon DSLR since the lenses will also fit. However this for the majority of times can't be said about Canons, they change their lens fittings so much that it put me right off. As for the D50 / D70 well I have a D70 since it has a better body build, the D50 feels far too plastic to me and so do the Canons around the prices you are looking. At the end of the day though I personally think that its not the equipment you have but what you see through the lens.

I would go for a Canon 100 times over, in this house we have Canons and Nikons and i would definatly go for the canon anyday. I really don't like using the Nikon- i find it hard work and the results arent good.
I have a Canon 300V and a Canon 300D and they are both suberb cameras. All my lenses interchange so i can use the 70-300mm zoom i have on both cameras. One thing i would recomend though is going for a 28-300mm zoom if you can afford it, they are so much more worth while as the need for carrying round 2 lenses is gone and there is no awkward lense changes which may result in you missing your photo!
Over all i would go for the Canon 350D, or a second hand 300D. They are both fantastic cameras!

When I say "research" I am meaning Google so my comments on this thread are not meant to diss any cameras that people own and like. A question for bigkev, the Pentax isn't a camera I have looked at so I know nothing about it but I do have an old program A with K bayonet lens, will they fit the IST ? that would save me a fortune

hockeybear yes you can use your k bayonet lenses on the IST but it would only work like a manuel camera and you would lose some of the functions, the pentax IST camera is a k bayonet fitting hope this as answered your question. also the pentax IST there is two variations of the camera there is the DS which as got the KAF bayonet mount and there is the DL which is compatible with K,KA,KAF and KAF2 ( some features may not be available with certain lenses ) but even so if you have got some of the old K bayonet lenses then you will save yourself a fortune. tomorrow morning I am going down to view both pentax camera's the DL and the DS as I might be buying one of them in the next week or two. can I make a suggestion to you why dont you go on the pentax web site then you can see what the camera's are like side by side.
