I am trying to put my DVDs to mpeg4 format, so i can load some on my ipod.
Up to now, all i have managed to do, is copy them to my hard drive, using DVD Shrink software. This file type ends up being. VTS_TS_ ect, ect. And i can only open them using Nero showtime player. Can anyone point me in the direction of some freeware program, that will help me achieve my goal. I have downloaded a shed full so far, none of which enable me to convert to mpeg4 in the end. Wish i had stuck to music files now, never have a problem encoding them !!

You'd have been better off ripping the movie with #1DVD Ripper as it converts directly to mpeg4.

On the conversion front... You could try Google for the following:

#1 Video Convertor
Hero Video Convertor
ImToo 3GP Video Convertor - My personal fave
XiliSoft Video Convertor

IIRC all offer a free trial

Oh my god!! 7hrs to rip a dvd using No1 dvd ripper. Is that right? Although dvd shrink was the wrong output file type, it only took 35 mins to copy a dvd.

dvd shrink ripped it to the raw vob files which need converting which will take between 3 and 10 hours depending on size of film, speed of puter etc

no1 dvd ripper rips straight from disc to hard drive and encodes to the desired format in 1 so no other encoding needed.

its time and resource hungry you know video encoding

Which is why I use it. It can also rip DVD into VCD/SVCD format and it (#1DVD Ripper) allows for disc spanning for long films onto CD.

I set the prog off when I go to bed, then burn the disc(s) in the morning before taking the kids to school.

I use Smartripper to rip the vob files to the hard drive (making sure it rips the whole movie as one vob file) and then encode using videora.

Hey presto.

Takes 2 hours max

On a Mac I use handbrake. Straight from DVD to Mpeg4 (and subtitles if needed, too!)

My friend - here is what you need to do.

Get yourself a DVD ripper along the lines of DVD Decryptor or my new personal fave- DVD FabDecryptor and read your DVD in.. then all's you need is.. CloneDVDMobile.

It works wonders converting a full DVD to Ipod in less than 1 hour.. 40mins precise on my PC which is a P4 and at perfect DVD quality as well - comes in at around the 300/400mb mark for each DVD quality film conversion.

Give it a whirl mate
Give me a shout if you need anymore help with it.

Thanx all for the info. Now I have got my head around this a bit more. I think i probably have the software i need. downloaded dvd shrink previously, and now understand this copies vts files, or as people call them vob files. Maybe It copies dvd to pc in approx 30 mins. Running nero recode 2 now on those files, from my nero 6. Never knew it even did this! Hopefully after the 1hr estimated recode, i am hoping i end up with an mpeg4 movie No1 dvd ripper does all this too, in one piece of software, but i still can not get over the 7 to 10 hrs copy time. Any how, will be back if i crash and burn. No pun intended. Just got to find a folder named hard disk now. That nero insists its copying the mpeg4 too.

Just use yasa dvd to ipod converter. It is quite awesome. I have never encountered any problem to convert dvd to mp4 with it. You can google it.
