My little dog died today. She was almost 16 years old, and her heart just wasn't coping any more. I think she had had enough as she stopped eating several days ago, and she refused to get off the settee (except for the call of nature). It is the hardest thing in the world to take your much loved pet to the vet to ask them to administer a lethal dose of anaethetic, then stay with them whilst they go to sleep. The guilt about 'killing' her is awful, even though in my heart of hearts, I know I did the kindest thing for her. I have to say that William (vet at Springfield's in Firth Park) was wonderful, he is kind and compassionate, and I wouldn't want anyone else to look after my pets.
Sorry, this is a bit of a conversation stopper but I feel really sad today.

Chin up chuck. It's horrible but it's for the best sometimes. It always breaks your heart though.

I'm so sorry to hear that. It does sound like she was loved and had a long, happy life. You know you did the best thing possible in awful circumstances. I've just given one of my cats an extra-big hug. Sending you my best wishes, and hope that you feel a little better soon.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. It's never easy to have to say goodbye to a pet. Please don't reproach yourself for doing so and never consider your actions as 'killing' as we both know that is not the case. All you did was easy your pet's passing. Having to make the decision to end a life is probably the hardest in the world. I've done it with dogs of mine, so I know the pain you're suffering. At least you can take comfort from the thoughts that you held your little dog in your arms whilst this happened, and the suffering will be no more. How lucky you were to have your dog for 16 years though. Just rejoice at that fact when you feel down. I wish you peace.

sorry to hear about pet, I went through the same thing a few years ago, i knew the time was comming and wished that he'd just go to sleep in his basket and never wake up, but alas, i ended up having to make the decision myself and take him to the vets. Im sure yr dog had a wonderful life full of love and as for the guilt ... it would have been twice as bad if u had left her to suffer, u did then best thing.

hugs to you. I was heartbroken just when my nannan's dog died, so I can't begin to imagine what it's like when your own beloved pet passes away. Don't beat yourself up over the end, you did it out of love.

Sorry to hear about your loss, but don't feel guilty, from what you say with her not eating or not getting up unless she had too it sounds like you did the right thing.

My family and I had to make that decision a couple of years ago for our dog, her quality of life was poor, she too stopped eating, lost weight, suffered arthritus and in the end was riddled with cancer and couldn't even get up to do her 'call of nature'.

But it still hurt to make that decision but I think it was the right thing to do. So try not feel guilty, she will be at peace now.

Big Hugs....

Take Care xxx

Oh I'm so sorry,

I've never had to make the decision and pray that I'll never have to, that mine will just go to sleep but it must be the hardest thing to do. And I applaud you for doing it.

You did the right thing, and the fact that it was so hard for you and you feel bad just proves it was the right thing to do. You obviously cared for her so much.

There's nothing I can say right now that will make you feel any better, but I am thinking of you and hoping that it won't be too long before you can talk about her again remembering the good times without being filled with so much sadness.

Sleep well little one xx

ps. have you heard about rainbow bridge? I think it's a nice thought but beware it made me cry so if you're not up to it don't click the link.Rainbow Bridge

Sorry about your dog. You've just lost a family member and there's not alot I can say to make you feel better other than offer my sympathy. Our first dog was also 16 when he had to be PTS. I had grown up with him so I know what it's like to lose them. I don't want to think about losing our Perry, he's so special.

It will take time, but you will start to remember more of the happy times.

Take care.

When we take on the role of 'pet parent' we take on responsibilities for looking after the animal's best interests- some of those are hard. You have the ability to prevent your animals from going through the sort of pain that it is so hard to see human relatives go through- that is both a responsibility and a privilege.

If this post has typos in it it's because I can't quite see what I'm typing properly- I'm having a few tears in sympathy with you and in memory of all of the beautiful cats I have lost over the years.

In time I hope that you'll also feel that the most loving thing you could have done for your little dog was to have spared her pain- allowing you to remember your life together without regret. I'm proud of the fact that I took the hardest decision for my lovely furry friends and I hope you can be too.

I as well have had to do the unfortunate and take beloved pets to be put down. It's always hard, even when you know it is for the best.

Hi Ali just wanted to say how sorry I am. I was going to post a link about the Rainbow Bridge but somebody beat me to it. I have a border collie, shes nearly 2 now and I hope I never have to make that awful decision, although I think you made the right one for your poor doggy.
Chin up chuck,Sam xxx
