If we get the expected rain over the next 24 hours, most of the city will be a paddling pool.

Well I hope there's still somewhere to paddle, and it doesn't end up like the 'splash' area at Millhouses, that just lets dribbles of water here and there and kids are queueing 10 deep just to get a cup ful of water. Last time it was hot I'd never seen so many kids paddling in the river there, as they wanted to properly cool off and there just isn't anywhere to do that now.

There is loads of good work being done down Rivelin, primarily by the Rivelin Valley Conservation Group. They are down there on the last Sunday of every month and other days clearing paths, restoring millponds, putting in benches, mending breaches etc.

And all done at no cost to the user.

Certainly puts their request for a measly 40p for parking into perspective doesn't it when you get great amenities like this.

Don't worry, God has taken his revenge.

Rivelin concrete is now filled with paddling pools.

They will be opened once they have removed all the concrete

Me, a grown woman....having been out on quite a large motorbike...my own not on the back of someone else....feeling incredibly hot during what we lovingly used to call a proper hot summers day...I parked up the bike....took off my leather and helmet and laid down completely submerged in the pool. Lots of parents laughed but then said what a brilliant thing to do in the blazing heat. Some of the parents then got into the pool too and were splashing about. Great fun.

I saw one of these replacement splash pools today in Matlock...looks very colourful and a small child was running about in it.
I love this story

Its great that they are not just going to fill the pools in though, there used to be lots of open air pools for the kids to splash about in at Summertime, no wonder kids these days say that they have nothing to do!

We used to swim in the river along side of paddling pools, can you still do this or is it a health and safety issue as per norm?

Would it not be easier to out the water fountains pipework in before the concrete?

Elfin Safety, surely?

So we can have signs warning us that water is wet and swimming goggles are advisable when taking a shower.

And a few more jobsworths keep their 'jobs'.

Did you not read about the teachers who had to wear goggles for removing Blu-tac?

You obviously missed my sarcastic wit.....surely if the PADDLING POOLS have been filled in with concrete and you ask when are the PADDLING POOLS opening then you must expect a smartarse response.

Not the end of my madness....when the new Peace gardens opened and the fountains were in full flow...I ran through it....came out soaking wet the other side to be greeted by 2 obviously disapproving Asian women...in beautiful saris. We chatted and then all three of us run through together. I really enjoyed that.

I slopped all the way back down Fargate with a big grin on my face...leaving a little water trail.....and got on the tram (I didn't sit down) and you couldn't have wiped the smile off my face if you tried.

The padding pools at Rivelin Valley Park are currently closed for refurbishment. Work is under way to convert the paddling pool area into a Splash Pad, with brightly coloured areas of water jets and interactive water play features.

The new area will be a more accessible and inclusive play area. Work has been funded by the Government's Aiming High for Disabled Children programme, which aims to improve services for disabled children and their families, and give them greater opportunities

The new Splash Pad is due to open in early August for families to enjoy. Three of the four pools will be filled in and covered with a colourful, non-slip surface area. A range of equipment will be installed, including water play tables, water jets and sprays.
And will soon be handed over to private ownership and people be charged to use it no doubt.
