I was at rivlin earlier today and noticed workmen demolishing the paddling pools and concreting them over.
What a shame, I have had many a happy hour there, both has a kid and with my kids. Shame many will miss-out on this opportunity when the sun does eventually come.

what a shame, and a waste of money when the country supposedly has none.

Not quite so bad
The padding pools at Rivelin Valley Park are currently closed for refurbishment. Work is under way to convert the paddling pool area into a Splash Pad, with brightly coloured areas of water jets and interactive water play features.
The new area will be a more accessible and inclusive play area. Work has been funded by the Government's Aiming High for Disabled Children programme, which aims to improve services for disabled children and their families, and give them greater opportunities
The new Splash Pad is due to open in early August for families to enjoy. Three of the four pools will be filled in and covered with a colourful, non-slip surface area. A range of equipment will be installed, including water play tables, water jets and sprays.

Just out of interest, is concrete cheaper than tarmac? How come they can afford to fill countless paddling pools with concrete but when it comes to filling in pot holes in the road they say they can't afford it?

Improvements in the first 5 years, I'm hoping to live to see it!
"...Amey will now be tasked with addressing the backlog of repairs and refurbishing the city’s roads, pavements, bridges and streetscene within the first five years of the contract and then maintaining them to the improved standard throughout the remaining 20 years of the contract..."

With today's Health and Safety lunacy, I am surprised we are allowed to let our children play in water in case they shrivel up or, worse, catch a cold.
Plus, if you want a paddle, get out on to the streets; didn't you know it hasn't stopped raining since March!!

I'd guess that the Governments "Aiming Higher for Disabled Children" project would have a tough time justifying spending it's funding on filling in pot holes.

Sad about the Paddling Pools....I had a mad moment there about 15 years ago.
Me, a grown woman....having been out on quite a large motorbike...my own not on the back of someone else....feeling incredibly hot during what we lovingly used to call a proper hot summers day...I parked up the bike....took off my leather and helmet and laid down completely submerged in the pool. Lots of parents laughed but then said what a brilliant thing to do in the blazing heat. Some of the parents then got into the pool too and were splashing about. Great fun.
I saw one of these replacement splash pools today in Matlock...looks very colourful and a small child was running about in it.

Sad to hear of the demise of the paddling pools.
I spent many happy hours there as a child.
I hope the new project bring many memories to the new generation using it.
Re Rivelin.......it's well overdue that something was done about the demise of the fishing ponds. The "nature trail" is a joke. It's overgrown and neglected.
And I won't even mention that "Chair".
