Hallam comes 2nd in the wealthiest areas in briton league table. At last Sheffield gets a mention in the national press and is only just behind Posh and Becks area Taton nr Manchester.
But is this a good thing or bad thing?
Basically this survey is measuring people with the most disposable income, there are richer areas, but they have to pay more for housing.
My view is that it is positive for Sheffield, it proves that we do have something to offer and are not the stereotypical city of Smog/Whippets/Flat caps/Full Monty that everyone thinks.
Sheffield is the hidden jewel and so is this forum.
Maybe we should keep quite about Sheffield and how good it is.

What area does Hallam cover? I reckoned it was around Dore-abouts, what with it being an ancient area and Dore being one of the oldest parts of Sheffield. Also quite rich these days
Is that right? Or am I on completely the wrong trail?

It also includes Broomhill and one of the borders runs along Crookes up to Mulehouse Road and on the other side of Crookes down the southern side of School Road.
Hallam is also top of the league nationally for people who hold post secondary education qualifications. One theory to explain these statistics is that there are 2 Universities and a teaching hospital within the constituency boundaries. Between them they employ a vast army of well qualified people.

The Sheffield Hallam constituency covers the South West part of the city of Sheffield. It is made up of four wards of Sheffield City Council - Broomhill, Dore, Ecclesall and Hallam. Each ward has around 15,000 registered electors in it making a total of around 60,000 for the whole constituency.
There is an ongoing review of electoral areas in Sheffield being carried out by the Boundary Commission. This means that all the constituency boundaries may be changed in the next few years.
i started a new topic for this without realising this had been started! again, well done Hallam! whats this about changing the constituency boundaries though? i hope labour aren't thinking of rigging it to bring in parts of labour strongholds so they have a chance of winning this seat, which at present they certainly don't, they're 3rd in the running. let me know of any info relating to this please.

This isn't Texas. The Boundary Commission takes input from all the major political parties but is, by and large, independant.

The Hallam constituency does not actually include any of Derbyshire. It does go into the Peak Park but this bit of the Park is within the Sheffield boundaries. The border in that direction runs along Stanage Edge then in along Rivelin Valley to the north and over Totley Moor to the south.
A lot of people outside Sheffield find it hard to grasp that the city includes moorland and part of a National Park. I think we should shout more about what a nice place we have to live. Sadly we have too often given out a very negative message, in part because we have been trying to get funds for regeneration which makes you focus on the negative not the positive.
The boundary commission are changing the Sheffield wards this year but the Parliamentary constituencies will not change until after the next General Election in 2005/6 and nobody yet knows the final shape of them. It is likely that Sheffield will lose half a constituency so one of them will have to include areas outside Sheffield, probably towards Barnsley/Penistone in the North.

But today is anyway a constituency day for me to see what is exercising Sheffield people at the moment. How else would I know about the angst caused by the road layout on Ecclesall Road than coming here?
