I've expressed my disgust, but I suspect the letter just went in the bin

Do you have an address/email so i can write a letter too... it really ****** me off, i was singing the praises of jolleys the other day for being a big chain that DOESN'T stock animals. Makes me wonder why i bother trying to be an ethical breeder sometimes.

I must be blocked, I can't post. Despite not being rude in any way. Just about sums them up.
Well thank goodness for Lottie and Pawsitively Pets, at least one pet supplies delivery company in Sheffield I can rely on to remain ethical!

Hi All
Jollyes have responded (rather curtly in my opinion) to my post on FB......
https://www.facebook.com/permalink.p...1¬if_t=like
Hope the above link works, basically they say they are not in it for the profit (although the job description for a store manager seems to indicate otherwise) RSPCA have checked their store and are happy with it and their procedures and they liaise with.....
"In addition, all of our stores enjoy good working relationships with re-homing centres regularly carrying out fund raising events which allows these organisations to provide and improve their level of pet care."
Feel free to respond to their comments, I don't want to appear to be the only one complaining about this

What is the major complaint, that they are selling these creatures or that they obtain them from Simons Rodents?

If these animals were sourced from reliable, good sources and gave proper advice, and had people who cared about the animals it wouldn't be so bad!

So the source is the problem?

They're not in it for profit? Okay..... I'm sure their shareholders hold the same view of a BUSINESS.
Kerrangaroo - many of us object to this for numerous reasons. Speaking personally I object strongly to how these animals are bred. By all accounts and the photos I've seen, Simon's rodents is a foul place where they are literally bred to death in tiny glass tanks and those who don't make the cut, can't knock out litters any more or aren't pretty enough are snake food / binned.
I also find it desperately worrying that these animals are sold by stores who have no knowledge on how to look after them and frequently sell them with incorrect cages, dangerous equipment, wrong food and absolutely no health advice.
It concerns me that people can buy a rat (or whatever) from a store as a commodity for £5 and think they are cheap, easy pets. Then when the rat grows a lump, it's a £100 bill - and they won't pay, because the rat only cost a fiver. Or a chest infection and antibiotics (very common) - another £30 to cough up. People see a direct correlation between the price of an animal and the price of its care and health care.
Numerous times I've seen pet shops sell cages that are far too small for the animal concerned and pass them off as "starter cages" - erm, animals grow, that's what they do, why waste money. Many people keep their fully grown animal in these cages which are inappropriate.
Add into the mix that animals bred in such conditions with no human interaction are then moved to a shop, with no human interaction and more than likely the shop keeper can't tell the sexes apart. So next up - you have more babies. Then they may be sold as singles (speaking about rats) and that's also incorrect - rats need their own company and shouldn't be stuck in a cage alone.
My favourite of all is how these chains then go "oh but we support charity, we even have our own". There would be no need for dozens of small animal charities if pets weren't sold as a commodity by people with no knowledge in the first place. It's then kind people (many of which are on this forum) that have to pick up the pieces with money, time and love when the call comes in to say "I bought this rat and it bites, I want rid".
It's never a surprise, it's a sad fact of life that until breeding animals is taken seriously and people stop buying them as a commodity we're stuck with.
Remarkably people get very upset with puppies and kittens being sold in shops, for me, small animals are no different. They shouldn't be there, full stop.
Hope that helps a little bit!
