tzijlstra   11 #97 Posted April 17, 2014 If Nato turns a blind eye to Russia's ambitions, other Nations (China) will see it as a weakness and a green light for their expansion plans. Germany and Japan did exactly the same pre WW2  This. People defending Russia in this case underestimate what is going on here, a sovereign state is being invaded through badgeless soldiers and annexed /peacefully/. China can do this to Taiwan now, it will just make sure it looks like most Taiwanese want to be a full part of China and boom it's gone.  There are so many of these conflict border zones and misplaced diaspora that it is really just a matter of time for other nations to start feeling around for what they can get away with.  ---------- Post added 17-04-2014 at 18:32 ----------  Sounds like they arrived at a reasonable agreement, let's see if it holds. tzijlstra   11 #100 Posted April 22, 2014 Beginning to become pretty clear what Putin wants now, if the Ukraine becomes a federation with large autonomy for the different areas he can still count on the East doing what he wants: ensure coal gets sold to Russia's preferred bidders. He'd of course prefer full control, but this has to be a good second. Plus he can continue plotting his megalomaniac project of making the Northern Black Sea into a massive tourist-trap.  Don't know how many of you are aware with the concept of Energy Wars but we are headed that way without even seeing it. Iraq was about the oil, this conflict is about the coal, China and Japan are at loggerheads over some stupid island cause they think there is oil, Norway frequently calls NATO meetings to discuss Russian exploitation of Arctic resources etc. etc.
 Share this content via...
SqueakyPete   10 #101 Posted April 23, 2014 (edited) Tensions seem to be rising at an increasing pace now.BBC So wheres the end game in all of this? The West don't want to budge, and the Russians certainly won't be showing the world any signs of weakness any time soon. Its just a shame its civilians that end up dead through war games.  ---------- Post added 26-04-2014 at 00:12 ----------  This isn't going away anytime soon.BBC Edited April 23, 2014 by SqueakyPete
 Share this content via...

DrNorm   10 #105 Posted April 26, 2014 It doesn't matter how much we argue over history, or which politician said what about the other's intentions, we should focus on the will of the majority of the people who want to live in peace.  We have the technology to bring instant democracy to explore peaceful resolutions. However that's not likely to happen when we allow our politicians and media to spread fear. The more everyone if fearful, the stronger they want to appear and the more threatening they appear to the other side. We're entering that downward spiral.  Where are the voices for peaceful resolution on the world stage?
 Share this content via...
L00b   441 #106 Posted May 2, 2014 (edited) Shooting wars start like this.  Assault started at 01:00 GMT this morning. Two Ukrainian helos reported brought down, with one Ukrainian pilot confirmed killed, the other reported captured.  Looking worse and worse, this  I didn't think improvised separatist 'pro-russian' citizen-soldiers would have known how to handle shoulder-fired SAMs. Gleiwitz incident, anyone?
