El Cid   212 #1 Posted May 5, 2017 The BBC are saying the Tories won everything, is that right?  The liberal Democrats won 49 more council seats, compared to 2016.  https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/may/05/no-liberal-democrat-resurgence-local-elections-share-votes-increases
 Share this content via...

El Cid   212 #3 Posted May 5, 2017 they lost but won? Oo  In 2011 the Liberal democrats had 1,098 councilors, in 2016 they had 378, now its increase to 437 in 2017.  So things have improved, but not as good as all those years ago in 2011. Look at the number of councils facing elections in both instances.
 Share this content via...

They won 42 seats that they didn't previously hold. They lost however 79 seats, meaning they hold 37 fewer seats than before the election. I don't think that could sensibly be described as winning 'more' seats.  https://www.theguardian.com/politics/ng-interactive/2017/may/04/local-and-mayoral-elections-2017-live-results-tracker
 Share this content via...

I don't think that could sensibly be described as winning 'more' seats. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/ng-interactive/2017/may/04/local-and-mayoral-elections-2017-live-results-tracker  This is how many councilors the Liberal Democrats had, from 2011 to 2017  2011 = 1,098 2012 = 431 2013 = 352 2014 = 427 2015 = 658 2016 = 378 2017 = 441  There is a definite improvement in 2017, why is there a discrepancy in the numbers between the BBC and Wikipedia, I dont know.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom_local_elections,_2017
 Share this content via...

Robin-H   11 #12 Posted May 6, 2017 This is how many councilors the Liberal Democrats had, from 2011 to 2017 2011 = 1,098 2012 = 431 2013 = 352 2014 = 427 2015 = 658 2016 = 378 2017 = 441  There is a definite improvement in 2017, why is there a discrepancy in the numbers between the BBC and Wikipedia, I dont know.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom_local_elections,_2017  Those aren't the total number of Lib Dem Councillors, they are the figures from each by-election when only a selection of seats were up. You therefore can't compare them as you aren't comparing like for like, only small proportions of the whole.  The Lib Dems were defending 484 seats. This isn't the total number of seats they have, only the ones that were up for election at this vote.  Of those 484, it lost 42 (net).  The Lib Dems have in total 1820 Councillors, (as of 5th May 2017).  https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_make-up_of_local_councils_in_the_United_Kingdom  Before the vote they had a total of 1862.
