Is alcohol good or bad for you and can you back it with scientific facts to back up your view point.

Will in time alcohol go the same way has cigarettes and decline in popularity?

Alcohol is lethal, ask anyone who has almost died from its effects.

So is oxygen. Same true for nitrogen. It's the dose that makes the poison.

Have you read the cited evidence above?

Like nearly everything, it's good or bad depending on the quantity you consume.

If that's the measure then water is lethal, drinking too much will kill you, so will drowning.

Oxygen is toxic and corrosive...

The majority of vitamins and minerals will kill you if you consume too much.

etc, etc...

That's a terrible argument, entirely based on 1 anecdote and not at all refuting the point that Obelix made.

Living evidence of what? That drinking in moderation is bad for you?

Obviously drinking too much is bad for you. Too much of anything is bad for you.

You do need to if you want to refute the argument.

Whatever happened to you is an anecdote. Taken on its own it is of limited value to the population at large. To determine effects on a population you need a population level study which the ones I listed are, and show that moderate consumption of alcohol is beneficial especially in the case of cardovascular disease.

As mentioned - in excess it is bad. I struggle with the addictive nature of it at times (I am one of those addiction+ types, hence I smoke and drink), but in general don't have issues with it as I learned how to manage it over time.

For every person like me there are 50 that just enjoy a drink every now and then, 2 or 3 that really struggle with it and a fair chunk that don't drink as they don't like it.

What does need seriously addressing though is the culture around alcohol in this country.
