Staples to be phased out

Recommended Posts

The UK High Street is losing another brand following the sale of Staples, the stationery specialist, to a restructuring company.

The US owner of Staples has sold the UK arm, which employs 1,100 people across 106 stores, to Hilco for a "nominal" sum.

Hilco said it was planning to phase out Staples-branded shops over the coming months.

Looks like the one at the bottom of the moor could be on borrowed time. Noy good news for the staff.

A store that employs turn of the millennium technology for their website, which is an important part of their business, is not going to do too well long term, a lack of investment in that side of things is going to take more and more of this type of 'not quite high-street' chains out in the coming years. I have seen some atrocious 'back-end implementations'.

It is sad though, I quite like going to Staples for a browse, unfortunately, increasingly, I never found anything I wanted.

Whilst I am sorry for the staff losing their jobs I can't say i'm surprised at all.

Its been years since I stepped foot in the place. Most supermarkets or Rymans will offer the day to day basics.

Anything more substantial for the office we simply order in from a contract supplier. Most of the time much cheaper and delivered to the door.

As for electronics I would most likely go to an online supplier - some of their prices for office machines are very far from competative.

Just seems another sad case of not evolving and not keeping up with the competition.

I remember (late 90s) the one at parkgate (before they halved it) and it was huge. Full of pens, paper and office furniture mostly. How times have changed.

Although the general stationery was good value, their barns of a building was just filled with overpriced computers and accessories.

** Phasing-out a trading name does not necessarily mean closure of a shop.

It might just be renamed.

Yes, I'm now told that the shops will simply be re-named following their being separated from the online website that will continue to be Staples .

Thanks Jeffrey,

I have a stationary fetish and I love the occasional look around the staples store. Was a bit miffed when I heard it might close and so I have been avoiding it.

Your fetish is more likely for "stationery".

But, as far as I know, the shops will stay open (albeit re-badged)

Well you stay that, but I am often so overwhelmed with a particularly comfortable biro that my major vowels sometimes swap places.
