Hey, I was just wondering what people think about South Normanton area off J28? We currently live in Grimethorpe, nr Barnsley. We moved here 2 yrs ago into a new build house. The estate is nice as it's mainly young families and young professionals like us, but the village itself is still a bit rough around the edges. Does anyone know how South Normanton compares? We really just want to find a nice village with a couple of pubs, a shop, good schools nearby, and nice surrounding areas. Look forward to hearing people's views! Thanks

Hi, I grew up near South Normanton and I think its similar to most places- some parts nice and some not so nice. There's an area called Broadmeadows that is quite nice and also several newer build areas. South Normanton has a small town centre with essential shops, and there is a large Tesco close by in Alfreton. Its also near to the McArthur Glen outlet on J28 roundabout and not far to drive to Mansfield either. The main secondary school is Frederick Gents which has quite a good reputation locally.
Hope this helps and good luck with your search

I live in a new build at the moment and I like it. I know some people prefer older houses but my personal preference is a new build, just for the convenience really and having everything done for you, and the 10 year guarantee is always good too! I know it's not for everyone but I really like (most) new houses.

Thanks for the info on South Normanton, looking forward to exploring on Sat :-)

Well fair enough, hope you find what you after!,

Personally New build houses for me have no character what so ever are over priced and 10 year guarantee isnt worth the paper they are written. Building firms will wriggle out of them and the NHBC is as much use as a choclate fire guard

I agree with Eckolad- but it wouldn't be for everyone to be the same. It sounds as if Broadmeadows is the place for you- it has no character at all and is very close to the A38 which means you're never far from traffic noise. But it has lots of relatively new properties and lots of nice grass verges. I agree about the guarantees not being that secure, and new properties lose a lot of value very quickly- my partner lost a lot of money on his five year old house not far from South Normanton- so unless you want to live there a very long time don't buy it as an investment. I know both South Normanton and Grimethorpe fairly well, I don't think they are that different- old coal mining communities with a lot of social disenchantment, but at least SN is close to the M1- so it is easy to get away!
