I've a few of the little year booklets which mention their names and places. They used to win some good prizes, better than working all week. My grandad never told me but my dad intimated that sometimes money men would say "if you win that canteen of cutlery I'll give you a fiver". This would have been quite an incentive when he was only earning 2 pounds a week as an apprentice pattern maker at Davy's !
