Sheffield city council - paying rent on a new tenancy

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Does anyone know if you still get free rent weeks when you move in to a council house? Pretty sure when I got my first house (21 years ago) you got an allowance to decorate the house in lieu of rent?

As I now have a mortgage I'd forgotten about this but someone mentioned it today.

Thanks,

I believe Sheffield council still operate 'free' rent weeks. Basically they divide the annual rent by 50 instead of 52 weeks, it just means for two weeks tenants who pay weekly/fortnightly don't have to pay anything on those two weeks. However, anyone paying monthly by direct debit will have their rent divided into 12 equal payments across the year.

Sometimes new tenants get vouchers to help pay for decorating and/or cleaning, but only if the property needs more than a reasonable amount of work. Its all here: http://www.sheffieldhomes.org.uk/myHome/MovingHome/NewHomeDecorationGrantCard.aspx

Yes- but of course those two weeks aren't really "free". The yearly total/rate is not reduced.
