kazbar   10 #1 Posted August 24, 2014 I have got a border collie puppy. Everything I have tried feeding him so far gives him the runs. Any recommendations that people have tried?
 Share this content via...
pinky800 Â Â 10 #2 Posted August 25, 2014 As pups we fed our 2 on Beta puppy. Could it be that you are swapping and changing his food without him getting used to one? I don't think it has to really be expensive food but a good mid range one and stick to it for a while, his tummy has to get used to which ever one you give him. When you got him did where you get him from tell you what they had been feeding him?
 Share this content via...
ccit   10 #3 Posted August 25, 2014 (edited) What have you tried? Also, have you tried them for a long enough period of time? As pinky800 says, it can take a while for the dog to settle down on one particular food. Are you giving anything else besides the dog food and are you following the guidelines regarding quantity? Overfeeding can cause loose stools. Resist feeding scraps then you know where you are with suitability of the food.  It might be useful to look for something that is grain free. Lots of foods (particularly the cheaper ones) are packed with cereals/carbohydrate (fillers) which are not particularly useful to the dog. Good quality foods are not found in supermarkets - most of these are poor in nutritional value so go to a specialist pet store. Cookes have a wide variety. I've tried various foods over the years and am now settled on a cold pressed one called Gentle. It is available at Cookes. The product is all age so they only have one type. I can recommend it but it is not cheap. However, you don't need to feed as much and it is absolutely essential to weigh it because it is dense and heavy so the quantity needed is less than kibble. monkeygirl   10 #4 Posted August 25, 2014 i have changed harvey (14 weeks old bichon frise) onto lily's kitchen stuff. it is grain free. quite expensive compared to others but i think it's more healthy. it seems to come quite highly recommended. you can order it online but if you look for local stockists then you can get it nearby and try some out. he loves the food and to me it's worth the extra cost
 Share this content via...
ccit   10 #5 Posted August 25, 2014 Yes, Lily's Kitchen has great reviews, which reminds me that the OP could also look at the All About Dog Food website which has loads of information, both general and specific to each product. Puppies grow very fast and need good nutrition so buy the best you can afford and it will show in the health of the dog. The fact that he has loose poo may indicates that the food you have tried is not being absorbed properly and has a too much filler. Â Hi there, I had the exact same problem with my border collie puppy, it was driving me insane because nothing seemed to work. We went into jollyes and they suggested putting him on K9 Optimum puppy. It took about 5 days to work its magic but it was brilliant. Never had a problem since, Highly recommend it! Â Think it must be a collie thing! Teachshef   10 #7 Posted August 30, 2014 Raw meat diets are supposed to be good for them. Doggy Den on little London Road sell some called natural instinct. Quite expensive though so I mix it with co-op complete biscuits for my collie. When she was a pup (she also had a sensitive stomach) we had her on Iams chicken which seemed to go down well. I did read somewhere though that Iams were involved in animal testing and that's why I changed to co-op own.
 Share this content via...
