Quitting alcohol, has anyone done it?

Recommended Posts

With much of social life revolving around bars and pubs. It would be great to give up alcohol for health and financial reasons.

With out becoming a recluse or boring!

Anyone done it? Thinking about it? Or trying to cut back?:)

I gave up. Now im happier than every.

When i say gave it up though, i only meant buying it. I now brew my own wine thanks to a poster on here. Done my first batch and ive got 30 bottles of wine and they cost around £2 each. Next batch will be even cheaper because i had the initial cost of the equipment.

Happy Days!!

Gave up drinking for 6yrs back in my 20's... Absolutely hammered it and made the decision before I pickled my poor liver!

Never felt so fit and healthy and I do keep telling myself to do it again but now that I'm older and my taste in alcohol has changed. I've gone from decking pints of lager to now just enjoying a glass of red wine at the weekend.

I've given up for two years now. I still go to pubs and I dont mind the alcohol free beer (its improved a lot). Sheffield tap does an excellent couple of 0 alcohol beers and its a relaxing place to drink.

You can still go to pubs and enjoy the atmosphere as most people will probably just think your a designated driver.

Also its amusing to watch everyone get drunk knowing you will be relaxed and chilled the next day.

I gave up alcohol completely when I was 17 and could drink a whole bottle of gin and still walk home, and didn't drink again until I was 27, then drank occasionally for the next 15 years, and now I've given up completely again.

The one thing that I'd say is that when you don't drink you really notice how poor company drunk people are, which changes your socialising choices.

Was it hard? What made you start again?

Yes. On the rare ocassions ive been sober at pubs the lack of interesting or indeed sensical conversion is an eye opener!

I gave it up at age 18 but I didn't stop going out with mates to bars, pubs and night clubs, alcohol consumption isn't a necessary part of having fun.

No it wasn't because I wanted to do it and after the first few months it became a way of life and I didn't even think about having alcohol anymore.. And I started again because someone bought me a really expensive bottle of wine one Christmas (they didn't know I didn't drink) and well basically I just had the one glass (it was yummy) and so I took to having a glass of red every so often. I did read an article though just before I was bought the bottle of wine that it is apparently more beneficial to have the odd glass of red wine than it is to be completely alcohol free so I think that swung it for me also.

I'm still not a big drinker and I have a rule that no alcohol is to be consumed on a school night!! but I do enjoy a glass (bottle) at the weekends.

My advice to you though if you are seriously going to give it a go is to stay away from the pubs/events where others are drinking for the time being as it may tempt you.. The temptation won't last cus as soon as you see the health benefits of not drinking beer anymore you'll be encouraged to continue.

Oh and I also went from a size 10/12 to a size 8 in the first year of abstinence.... I'm now back to a size 12 :hihi::hihi:

Apparently 20 units is safe. I couldnt do that. Cutting altogether is only option. Im pretty scared of withdrawals symptons tbh.

Just give it a shot! take each day at a time and don't beat yourself up if you fall off the wagon..

Get a hobby that keeps you busy at night times if you can.

You know, if you feel its a problem and you are worried about withdrawals you can always go and discuss with your GP and they will be able to guide you much better than I could :)
