aliceBB Â Â 10 #1 Posted February 15, 2015 Was charged an arm and a leg recently for the privilege of leaving the waste from renovating our bathroom (shower base, tiles, plasterboard) at our local recycling centre. Â Apparently charges were introduced in August, when all N. Yorks recycling centes were contracted out to a private company. So this company charges you to leave stuff at the tip, then it makes even more money by selling it on(for road hardcore, etc). We also have to pay to have garden waste collected, which the private company then sells back to the local council for use as compost. Â I am left wondering why I pay Council Tax. Â A conversation with a plumber revealed that most people just take their household waste to the tip free, and fill their wheelie bins with the stuff they would otherwise have to pay to dump. Â What's it like in Sheffield?
 Share this content via...
Penistone999 Â Â 10 #2 Posted February 15, 2015 Its free to dump your rubbish at the tips . Tradesmen arnt suppose to use them , but they just either park the vans outside and carry the rubbish in to get rid for nowt , or take it in their car and pass it off as their own . Â But for the public the dumps are free to use. Â Down here the tips are subbed out to a private company called Veolia ,who have subbed them out to another private company called The Green Company ( whoever they are )
 Share this content via...

I don't object to tradesmen being charged to dump trade waste. It just seems wrong that ordinary householders are being charged (twice) to take stuff from their own homes, and that the profit form that isn't even going back to the council to provide local services
 Share this content via...
cgksheff   44 #5 Posted February 15, 2015 (edited) North Yorkshire has only started charging for some items ... the items you wanted to dump (unfortunately) ...  "Charges for waste Residents will now be charged for the disposal of hardcore, rubble and plasterboard delivered to our household waste recycling centres."  http://www.northyorks.gov.uk/article/29205/Hardcore-rubble-and-plasterboard-waste Edited February 16, 2015 by cgksheff
 Share this content via...

kelly4danny   10 #7 Posted February 15, 2015 Thin end of the wedge, methinks! It'll be cardboard next. Then compostable waste.  I would most certainly contact the council and complain. Council tax is a huge burden on families, yet the majority pay it without question. It seems like North Yorks council like to see its residents pay over the odds for a service that should be included in your right as a local council tax payer. It seems the consultation closed on 6 January 2015 regarding waste resources, but that does not mean you cannot air your views, as you couldn't possibly have known the implications of changes to the councils waste procedures as the results would have been in section "Blah" of appendix "Blah Blah". Obelix   11 #8 Posted February 16, 2015 Thin end of the wedge, methinks! It'll be cardboard next. Then compostable waste.  Drive it to Thorp Arch. That's Leeds council it's free and they don't yet check if you are a resident.
 Share this content via...
geared   268 #9 Posted February 16, 2015 So what's in it for Veolia?  They cream off a tidy profit for doing jack-all.
 Share this content via...
Cyclone   10 #10 Posted February 16, 2015 They cream off a tidy profit for doing jack-all.  They're responsible for the delivery of the service, they've chosen to outsource it, seems like good business to me.
 Share this content via...
skinz   10 #11 Posted February 16, 2015 Will this increase the likelihood of fly-tipping? Not to mention the cost of clearing it up (taxpayers).
 Share this content via...
Janus   28 #12 Posted February 16, 2015 That`s what I was thinking Skinz. I think the the local authorities need to be very careful, people will only tolerate so much. As in the OP`s case, people are now paying for a service through their council tax and are not receiving that service.
 Share this content via...
