Ukraine warns Russia against 'aggression' in Crimea

Recommended Posts

What is happening in the Crimea is incredibly worrying....

Ukrainian interim President Olexander Turchynov has warned Russia against any "military aggression" in Crimea.

He said Russia's troops from Russia's Black Sea Fleet should not move outside their naval base in Sevastopol.

The warning comes after armed men seized Crimea's regional parliament and the government headquarters of the Russian-majority region.

The Russian flag had been raised over both buildings in Simferopol. It is not clear who the men are.

The situation in Crimea does not appear to be getting any better. :(

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-26379722

Ukraine's interior minister has accused Russian naval forces of occupying Sevastopol airport in the region of Crimea.

Arsen Avakov called their presence an "armed invasion".

But Russia's Black Sea Fleet has denied that Russian servicemen are taking part.

The other main Crimean airport, Simferopol, has also been occupied by armed men, thought to be pro-Russia militia.

Notice how Russia waited until the Sochi games were over before interfering.

I'm not sure what to think of any of this.

There's been a Government change in Kiev, but it's hardly been democratic.

Whilst there have clearly been a lot of people on the streets wanting change, are they a noisy minority or do they represent the majority?

They may well be representative of the Kiev population, but are they representative of the Ukraine population?

There may well be millions of people sat at home in Ukraine thinking to themselves that they didn't want this change in Government.

They need proper elections there as soon as possible, so that the will of the people as a whole is heard and not just the dissatisfied.

It's very worrying where this may all end up.

Regards

Doom

Remember that in the mid 1990s we guaranteed the integrity of Ukraine. Kind of like we did for Belgium, and look how that turned out a century ago...

Into the Valley of Death they rode etc... let's not get stuck into another little brush war again....

The charge of the light brigade was a misunderstood order, they were not meant to ride to their deaths, they were supposed to flank, not charge head on.

How can you democratically remove a leader that will not step down? You have to use other means. This is not democratic, but what is is the democratic process that follows and the interim government is doing what it can to hold elections as soon as possible.

Er yes, I do know that as does anyone who's read Tennyson....

Merely pointing out that we made a ballsup of it last time and we will probably do it again...

Yanukovych was a crook, and steeped in corruption. he had to go.

When Britain's empire was being dismantled, we maintained links, and a good relationship with countries via the development of the Commonwealth.

Is this type of relationship not possible between the Ukraine and Russia? Or is that too simplistic.

It's complicated by the fact that Russia officially gave Ukraine some of it's territory whilst it was still part of the Soviet Union - including the Crimea where the Russian Black Sea Fleet still has it's base. Most of the population in the Crimea are ethnically Russian rather than Ukrainian.

Russian Army invading Ukraine!

The Russians are conducting military exercises on their own territory; disturbing and suspiciously timed military exercises, but military exercises all the same.
