Original details

Police have closed Spital Hill between at least the green and the Tesco car park entrance.

Sheffield Online say unconfirmed reports of fighting and subsequent shooting. Buses city bound going down Pitsmoor Road

Battlepup, there was not much mentioned, and not much officially reported still.

Understanding is that following an altercation between two groups from the local area, a man has been shot and seriously injured. Some reports that it may be linked to a recent stabbing involving the same groups. None of this verified though.

Edit: oops; partially verified in The Star, my mistake.

Any chance of reposting original details of the incident?

There appears to have been tensions between two different small groups of young man around spital hill. One did something, other group comes back next day and does something worse.

Someone else mentioned earlier on forum when different groups of man get too close or bored friction can happen. A shooting may have happened this week but I am certain they learn from it and use that experience to make it better, not worse in the long run.

This is not going to be a ongoing trend and things will calm down again. The odd unusual incident will not turn Sheffield in a gangtown.

The Star reports are a bit odd. The drugs turf war angle seems perfectly believable - what I find odd is that if shopkeepers are regularly seeing people with weapons, why are they not reporting that to the police, or if they are reporting it to the police, why are the police not doing anything about it? Because despite the significant police presence of the last couple of days they have been conspicuously absent for a very long period before that. If shopkeepers have reported seeing people with knives, surely that would have allowed a section 60 order to have been put in place a long time ago?

One of the Star articles quotes someone as saying that the dealing and using on Spital Hill is so bad that people won't use the park any more - but there is no park anywhere near Spital Hill. This is the problem with the Star - you get the sense there is some truth in there somewhere but it's hard to know where.

SYP need to get a grip on this, rather than put a load of officers on there after something has happened.

Abbeyfield Park?

That's a good way from Spital Hill. I'm not saying people definitely aren't using drugs there - I haven't been there for a long time - but there are closer places for people to use if they've bought summat from Spital Hill. This is the problem with the drug trade though - years ago it used to be Burngreave Cemetery and Catherine Street where a lot of dealing went on, but as it gets dealt with in one place it just moves somewhere else. If the police arrested every dealer in Burngreave, gangs from Parson Cross and elsewhere would move in. Long term we need better drugs policy, maybe now the influence of the Daily Mail et al. is waning we have a better chance of that.

The area is lost. It's a ghetto slum.

Why are people bothered? If they want to go to war with each other let them.

Sheffield is becoming a gangster's paradise. The police have lost control some time ago. More shootings than ever before. This is no city of sanctuary and current statistics back that.
