People search Rightmove etc by price band and may not be searching the adjacent bands. A £1 difference can move a house from the top of one band to the bottom of another.

This is certainly true. The price should, if possible, set to £280,000 exactly as then it will appear in the £270,000 - £280,000 search and the £280,000 - £290,000 bracket.

Also, Rightmove lists properties downwards starting from the highest price in a bracket so £280,001 puts this one right at the bottom and less likely to be seen

All true. There's no SDLT/HMLR costs difference at that point on the fixed scales.

Also, it's unusual, so draws attention (this thread is evidence of that), which is good if you're selling something.
