DUFFEMS   55 #25 Posted October 29, 2013 We lived in Alexander Road and went on the annual seaside trips from about 1957 to early 60's  I also lived on Alexandra Road from 1959-1970. I went on UHWMC trips with my little brown parcel ticket bearing my name fastened to my coat and half a crown spending money given by the "club". My grandparents used to go most Saturday nights and I recall grandma rushing my grandfather to get ready because "you'd got to get in early to get a seat fo't turns". scaleman   10 #26 Posted February 19, 2017 (edited) My old man was secretary of UHWMC for years, about early 60,s and my granddad was president. We used to go on the club trip every year to Cleethorpes, there would be coaches stretched up passed the cuckoo for everybody to get on to go. All my mates used to get on my old mans coach(he was apart time driver for SUT) he used to drive like a maniac and always get there first! His name was Arthur Staley, my granddads name was also Arthur Staley and at the time I joined as a member there were two of my uncles on the committee, so you can guess the result! Orangepip   10 #27 Posted February 19, 2017 My uncle was a steward there in the 60's and I always went on the trips. Every year I was travel sick. My first boyfriend Tosh13 took me there when I was 16.
 Share this content via...
Gilly Jnr   10 #28 Posted February 20, 2017 Yes I remember it well, especially the Club annual outing to Cleethorpes. If memory serves me correctly, we kids got two shillings and sixpence and half price tickets for the amusements. On other occasions, we got five shillings. As I lived on Heeley Bank Road, I recall the excitement as the "Sheffield United Tours" coaches came up the road on their way to the club, from the garage on farm road. Gilly Jnr   10 #30 Posted July 25, 2017 (edited) I remember the Upper Heeley WMC I lived on Fitzroy Road just down the road from the club and me and my brother Alan use to go on the club trips every year. My father was a life member of the club, and also use to sing on the clubs in the 50's. Don't no if you know but the site of the club is now a senior citizens home, but Cat Lane is still there.  I too remember UHWMC and in particular the Club trips to Cleethorpes. I can still feel the excitement and the SUT coaches thundered up Heeley Bank Road, past my house. If I recall correctly, we were given five shillings (25p) or half a crown (12.5 pence) together with half price tickets for the amusements.  My grandfather who lived on Fitzroy Road and had an allotment off Cat Lane, used to earn his beer money selling tomatoes, or flowers (peace offerings for long suffering wives). carfieldkid   10 #31 Posted August 2, 2017 I remember Arthur Staley - he was a friend of my father Harold Bain - also a life member of Upper Heeley WMC. I think he sometimes came fishing with George Tingle, my dad, Jack Drew and other friends (with me outside school terms) in George's Dormobile van. George Tingle had the tackle shop at Heeley Green my dad worked there on his days off and an occasional treat was to go with him to the maggot farm - run by an expatriate Pole out in North Nottinghamshire - to collect biscuit boxes full of fresh maggots collected under rotting carcases in a big barn. Like others I also went on the WMC seaside outings queuing outside the club to get our brown envelope wage packets of spending money - which I never managed to completely spend despite eating sweet stuff till I could hardly walk. JOHN HABS Â Â 10 #33 Posted August 3, 2017 I became a member there in 1973 and use to go in with my wife most Saturday evenings. Â You would always see the same faces sat in the same places and if you happen to sit where they usually sat would get a tongue lashing. Â There were some good groups ( we now call them bands ) that came to UHWMC, on more than one occasion, my wife and I ( we were in our early twenties then ) would be sat opposite old age pensioners who complained throughout the act being on about it being too loud. Â I remember a bloke with an handle bar tach and glasses who use to call out the tombola numbers......use to make us laugh, every number he called out was attached to some strange colour.
