chem1st   10 #40 Posted January 6, 2012 LMAO at the people who constantly whine that the council wont give them a house (or bigger house). Go buy one or rent private.  IMO social housing should be a short term helping hand (6 months-1yr) for people to get on their own feet.  There is no free market, the state has a duty to house those whom it has disallowed to house themselves.  We need to build build build, to make up for the selling off of social housing, the demolition of, and increased cost due to fraudulent mortgages, perverted landlord benefits etc. etc.
 Share this content via...

The rest of us have to take some personal responsibility for our living arrangements.  I think that whilst lenders must take some responsibility for lending daft amounts, so must borrowers who bought homes way beyond their financial capabilities. There is also evidence that some people who sit it out on the waiting list for years, want the right to buy once they have their desired home. There is often no 'need' in those cases, and many housing authorities and associations now only accept applications from people with some level of need, including a financial need. Perhaps that's the way we need to go in Sheffield. The housing register would be reduced by at least 2/3 at a stroke. Leah-Lacie   10 #43 Posted January 9, 2012 Not everyone has thousands of pounds for a deposit!  We're already renting private, but only a 2 bed and needing a 3. In no rush to move at all, not expecting anyone to hand us anything, and do realise we may be waiting a few more years. Being smokers, and having pets, and not being on huge incomes, plus the benefits such as cheaper rent, and water included in the quoted rent price, and just feeling a bit more stable than with a private landlord, makes us want to go council. The rest of us have to take some personal responsibility for our living arrangements. Better still, it's more accurate to say that each Local Housing Authority has such duty to house the homeless- the Government itself does not.
