Jeffrey Shaw   90 #6 Posted January 19, 2017 Well that's obvious isn't it, I meant will other councils try it on as well. Well, the law does permit such increases- but only if the CT payers vote in favour.
 Share this content via...
andyofborg   11 #7 Posted January 19, 2017 Yes it would, but it will not happen, because the referendum result will be a NO.  maybe it will be rejected, but maybe it wont be.  everyone knows adult social care is in crisis and the consequences of doing nothing are obvious to everyone.  given that doing nothing is not really an option and central government doesn't seem to want to help then the council doesn't have much of a choice if they want the service to survive. El Cid   219 #8 Posted January 19, 2017 its to pay for care to the elderly, nothing wrong with that.  I believe about 60-70% of council tax goes towards paying for the care of the elderly and vulnerable children.
 Share this content via...
Robin-H   11 #9 Posted January 19, 2017 I believe about 60-70% of council tax goes towards paying for the care of the elderly and vulnerable children.  Not quite (yet).  https://www.theguardian.com/public-leaders-network/2015/mar/24/how-council-tax-pound-spent  If you add together 'Care for vulnerable adults', 'looking after children' and 'homelessness' you get to just under 50%.  It's expected to increase to over 60% by 2020 though. The Joker   10 #12 Posted January 19, 2017 We need a poll.  Would Sheffielders support a 15% increase in Council Tax to pay for elderly care, given the £hundreds of millions the council has wasted on white elephants ?
 Share this content via...
