An Easter Championship Dream.

Recommended Posts

Everyone a Winner

Little did I know as I lined up that day

That this was the last Star Walk as we were sent on our way

Twenty-five times in the Star Walk, it's been a part of me

A wonderful spectacle for all to see

Start at The Star and down High Street we go

Keep your back straight, don't forget to heel and toe

Infirmary Road on to Middlewood Road, a few miles into the race

Trying so hard to keep up with the pace

On to Leppings Lane, past Wednesday's ground

With a new burst of energy you've suddenly found

Halifax Road and we are going flat out uphill

But the leaders have gone past as if we were standing still

Turn at the Norfolk Arms and down Whitely Lane we go

Keep the tempo high, can't afford to go slow

Church Street at Ecclesfield we are now at eight mile

Keep going, keep going, never mind the style

The great crowds in Ecclesfield cheering all the walkers on

Even though the leaders have long since gone

On we go now we've got to get this right

As the dreaded Barnsley Road hill comes into sight

With lungs bursting as you go over the top

No time to catch your breath or to stop

Longley Lane, Herries Drive, you are going well

How will you finish? Only time will tell

Herries Road, Penistone Road, turn into Hillsborough Park

And you've tried so hard to make your mark

On to the athletics track and your senses are reeling

But you've finished The Star Walk, a wonderful feeling

John Burkhill (Super John, Sheffields mad walker with the pram)

And yes Padders all brilliant days.

Oh , and yes Padders it was'nt a dream that particular day . . . it was as you say . . . reality.:)

hiya these letters bring back no end of memories for me, like in 1962 malcolm tolley's dad hugh worked at the same scissor manufacturer as me, his was the pinking shear side, and about southey green school, my cousin went there left xmas 1952 maureen white her name was, she lived on northhill rd no 98, i always said if she got up for school late her mum could pop her over their fence at the bottom of their garden into the school yard.

I probably gave (or at least offered) Mick a cardboard cup of water as he passed the Five Arches pub. Dozens lined the street at that point. Always a great day!

Well done Mick, most found it quite a slog. It nearly killed me!

yep, nearly killed me as well. I thought I was super fit at that time. 18yrs old playing football every week for atlas and Norfolk..i remember it was a hot sunny day, set of from high st, got to infirmary rd I was knackered....

stupid me did it in a pair of pumps, I could"nt walk for 3days, massive blisters on my feet..but what an achievement for mick, and record time too, must be like winning a gold medal at the Olympics.

Well that year Dave 1964 as i came over the top of Barnsley Road opposite the Pheasant pub

I turned and glanced backwards seeing High Greave in the distance and the 2nd man had not

reached the High Greave pub , down in the bottom . . half a mile back , what a lead , brilliant feeling (was i dreaming , bet i was.)

As i crossed the finishing tape at Owlerton Stadium , the 2nd finisher Vinny Hague

was a mile further back.

Vinny's brother Mick Hague had won the Star Walk the previous year 1963 ( an ex race colleague ).

I felt a little sympathy for Vinny denying the Hague's a " family double ".

The 3rd man to finish was a Southey Green lad by the name Jack Tyree who lived very near

you Dave on Dryden Road .Maybe you knew him or his family ?

Jack was trained for the Star Walk by non other than International walker Lol Allen who

trained Jack down the Hillsborough area.

Hi willybite.

Malcolm Tolley was an insurance agent High Street at the time.Trained with Malcolm a few times from their house, living somewhere off West Street area long time ago ,terrace house.

They moved a year or so after and resided at the then new town of Basildon.

Yes about Southey Green . . . is'nt it a small world as they say ?

Well willybite your cousin Maureen White and myself were not only in the same year but

also same classmates. Maureen probably does'nt remember me , so long ago .

We used to walk along Northhill Road to and from school some days and use Crowder Road

entrance as against Collinson Road entrance.

Long time ago reckon Maureen had light coloured hair , tallish , well she was to me ,i was

only 5'2 " when leaving school the following midsummer and was a skinny lad but late

teens grew to 6' ft and remained skinny all my life thanks to working but more importantly

intense athletic training.I'm passionate about it doing 90 to 105 miles a week don't race now

but still train high intensity.I'm happy and enjoying life.

Northhill Road was at 90 degrees ,remember a girl in our class , lived towards the top end

St Bernards Church can't recall her name .

Maureen may recall Brian Sellars year or so older, lived at the 90 degree turn , there used

to be an archway side of the house.

Remember me to Maureen ( if she remembers me ).Send my love.

Still dreaming . . . Mick.

I did the 'Star Walk' 4 times in the late 70's and early 80's.

My best time was around 4 hours 30 minutes.

Not too bad, I did have a pint in the bottom Red Lion, 2 in the Dev and 2 in the Five Arches.

I left the Arches with my third one and left the empty glass on the wall opposite the Wednesday ground. :hihi:

Hi Hotty

Have to chuckle at the vast majority of your posts , they're great.

But this one beats the "daddy of them all " .

This one is truly worth an entry into the "Guinness Book Of Records ".

People regular have pub crawls but this one beats the lot of them.

To enter and walk in a 12 mile race and along the route down 6 pints and actually finish

the race in a quite respectable time is a great achievement ( one that might never happen

again ), and one that no - one might take up the challenge.

All achieved on a very hot day.

But the icing on the cake, so go speak, has to be your last pint.

Having consumed 2 pints in the Five Arches then to step outside on to Herries Road with

your 6th pint to a thunderous round of applause from the huge crowd of spectators

must have been a proud moment to behold.

Then off towards the Stadium guzzling down the beer and placing the empty glass on the wall opposite your beloved Hillsborough football ground.

Must have also been a proud moment also to pass your sacred football ground

twice en route.

What about your finish in Owlerton Staium . . . bet thats something you'll never

forget Hotty , eh ?

Just one last thing Hotty , . . . Did you ever celebrate ( beer / spirits afterwards ?)

One thing is for certain . . . Mick will never forget that treasured day.

Was i dreaming ? . . . If i was i don't ever want the dream to ever end .

Dreaming . . . Dreaming . . . I' m always Dreaming.:) I'm always dreeeeeammming.

Yes Padders the Easter dream is coming true .

I dreamt we'd get Huddersfield in the final . . .

. . . but never mind . . . we'll beat em in the two legs.

I'm now dreaming walking up Wembley Way . . .

. . . meeting Fulham in the final .

Nearly time to book two seats on the Soccer Express with my lad .
