Recommended Posts

My dad worked at Hill Brothers as a holloware buffer just before retiring, then went back part time after my mum died.

My dad's cousin owned half the business of Hill Brothers. He too was a holoware buffer.

I just had a look on Google Street View and at first got this - https://www.dropbox.com/s/88hbgmnqpzogcoi/suffolk_road_1.png?dl=0

Then stepped back a few yards and got the later picture here - https://www.dropbox.com/s/ernaiiu0cjamfwp/suffolk_road_2.png?dl=0

If you are asked to sign in you can just close the sign in window to view.

Something like deja vue drew me to open that picture.

My uncle was a chemist and he had, or shared, one of those units in the old grey building (not his main shop).

I would go down there (circa 1950) and wash out medicine bottles for him on Saturday mornings for a little spending money!

God knows how careful or hygenic they were in those days!

I used to pass there on the bus on my way to school in the late 70's and someone there had a white Lotus Esprit just like the James Bond one. Looked really cool.

It was first opened as Talbots the butchers. It was built on the site previously used by Kennings, had a couple of Petrol pumps if I remember. After the pumps were removed Kennings had a Car Hire place there.

My dad's cousin owned half the business of Hill Brothers. He too was a holoware buffer.

I worked in the Sheffield Pewterware trade and Laycocks supplied many businesses (large and/or small) - Little Mesters, Pewter, Cutlery, Engineering, Motor trade etc) with pumice, mops, dollies, for buffing & polishing etc.

We sometimes had to call in to Laycocks to collect supply orders, and also used to make the occasional visit to Hill Bro's (Silversmiths) Ltd, I was only young and was fascinated watching those guys creating beautiful silver 'pieces'!. We were always escorted! by a big elderly guy, grey-haired, bit of a paunch, wore thin-metal-rimmed specs (a Silversmith, I believe!?), a really nice polite man. I left the trade and some years later our paths crossed!, we had a chat during which he offered his Hill Bros business card, should I ever have the need, please call in!. I still have the card in a wallet in the loft. Just in case! ;):)

Happy times :D
