mafya   220 #157 Posted April 9, 2016 (edited) So does this mean you can view off of your property or not ? It makes no difference really to me as i wont be moving my cameras again but want to know if what police was saying is right or wrong ??  My camera looks down my drive and the across road neighbours front door is in view of it. A couple of years ago he complained to the police who came round and after I told them that my camera is for looking on my drive and not on his doorway and showing them the view they told my neighbour that it wasn't pointed at his door intentionally and that I wasn't doing anything wrong. If say you had a camera pointed directly onto the neighbours back garden then it could be said that you are invading their privacy but if part of anyone's property ends up being seen in the background unintentially and is unavoidable then you are not doing anything wrong. When someone pulls the data protection act line on me for anything I reply by saying "oh I'm a data protection specialist myself and would they like to tell me what section of the act I'm breaching" to which they usually have no reply. Jomie   30 #158 Posted April 10, 2016 (edited) Out of common courtesy you should reposition your camera. Your neighbour is absolutely right to complain. No matter what the police or anyone else says, you are morally wrong to have your camera on your neighbour's front door, even though it is in the background. We all have a right to privacy and you are invading his/hers. It must be horrible for this person/people to be constantly spied on. Many people would be glad that you are not their neighbour when you act so selfishly! Edited April 10, 2016 by Jomie
 Share this content via...
Cyclone   10 #159 Posted April 10, 2016 I have several cameras facing out of the front of the property, due to the way physics works, light going in straight lines and so on, they all capture images of the other side of the street in the background, and indeed the public road and pavements. If my neighbours had similar cameras facing my house I'd be quite happy about it. In the event that I was burgled, I'd go and ask them if they had any footage.  Cameras can't see through house walls or doors, so nobody is being spied on. You are being watched or noticed all the time by someone - until something happens and then everyone is scared to admit that their plain nosey and refuses to co operate with the police.  If i want to spy on my neighbours i just get the binoculars out and watch out of the window. Jomie   30 #161 Posted April 10, 2016 There is a difference between people 'curtain twitching' and being recorded on cctv. As for spying, you have your opinion and are entitled to it but IMHO it is an invasion of privacy if you cannot enter and leave your own home without being recorded on someone's cctv. Gradually and almost imperceptibly our privacy is being eroded and this is just one more step in that direction. Your home is your sanctuary and should be free of this sort of thing. It is appalling. Cyclone   10 #162 Posted April 10, 2016 Outside your front door you are in public view, there is no right to privacy in that spot. On your back garden I'd agree that being filmed would be intrusive.
 Share this content via...

I live in S5 and protecting my van which is full of tools and my cars is of more importance than some neighbours feelings of being spied on when that is not the case. I'm not breaking any laws and the neighbour has had plenty of time and opportunity to take legal action but of course he can't as I'm not doing anything wrong. hotrock   10 #164 Posted April 10, 2016 When i installed my system a couple of years ago, i spoke with my neighbours to basicly inform them of my intention, 1 neighbour was a little concerned about their privacy, and he told me it was illegal for me to record his property at all. I tried to explain about getting the angle needed to view my property it would be almost impossible to not record his property, i tried to explain that as a private non business residence i could record freely within certain constraints IE (not into his bathroom etc) I installed my system regardless. Roll on a couple of years the same neighbour was burgled, they were round mine faster than a speeding bullet asking for the CCTV footage, up to date my CCTV footage has been used in 3 burglary incidents and 1 murder case, (the joys of living on the Arbourthorne, lol). My front cameras now cover both neighbours on each side. 1 rear camera covers the main garden, whilst the remaining camera covers my kitchen off shot and by default of the location of the off shot the camera covers 4 other rear gardens, My neighbours love it and claim they feel safer in the knowledge that should something go wrong, there is a chance we may get a good resolve with the CCTV recordings.  Image from my CCTV.  http://i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp321/hotrock69/2016-04-10.png
 Share this content via...

Its illegal ! As ive been informed many times on this thread it doesnt seem to be th cade but thid is what happened. As for having your camera on someones door in view its disgusting and you ought to be ashamed and if my door was in view of ccrv on a neighbours house there would be no cameras there very soon !! Magic?
 Share this content via...
